E’ arrivata dall’Australia… - ‘It arrived from Australia…’

…la mia calza di Natale, quella che dovevo ricevere con la mia partecipazione al ‘The great stocking swap’ e del quale avevo già parlato in questo post.
Devo dire che avevo perso un po’ la speranza, pensavo che il postino non mi avesse trovata, per quanto il mio nome sia sul campanello e sulla cassetta delle lettere. Ed invece, proprio quando avevo scritto a Selina che le mie aspettative erano state deluse, cosa ti vedo spuntare dalla suddetta cassetta delle lettere:

I have to admit that I had lost every hope, I thought that the postman hadn’t found me, in spite of my name beeing on the bell and the mailbox. Instead, as soon as I informed Selina that my expectations had been frustrated, what did I see protruding from above mentioned mailbox?



Ho dovuto frenare la mia impazienza (come dice la mia amica Jasmine: quanto dobbiamo essere vecchie per riuscire a dominare la pazienza?), prima volevo fare una foto, anche se mi dicevo: se taglio la busta dietro posso tirar fuori il contenuto e nessuno se ne renderebbe conto. Ah, le piccole disonestà che ci diciamo!

Ed ecco cosa ho trovato.


I had to bottle up my impatience (as my friend Jasmine says: how old have we to be in order to succeed to constraint our patience?), first of all I wanted to take a picture but this is what was going in my mind: if I cut the back of the envelope, nobody will know. Ah, the little dishonesties that we tell to ourselves!


This is what I found.


Vorrei richiamare l’attenzione sulle fantasie dei tessuti natalizi, se volessi averne di simili dovrei farli venire dall’estero. A volte mi dico che queste crafters anglosassoni sono ben più fortunate di noi, possono andare in un negozio e scegliere. Anche comprare online è più facile, per noi tra costi di spedizione, dazio ed Iva, è proprio un lusso importare tessuti ed utensili introvabili in Italia.



I would like to draw your attention on the christmassy patterns of the fabrics, if I wanted to work with something similar I will have to import them from abroad. Sometimes I think that the anglo-saxon crafters are much luckier than we are, they can walk into a shop and chose. Buying online is also easier, we have such cost of delivery, import taxes and TVA that it is a luxury to import fabrics and tools in Italy.


Quello che veramente mi ha conquistata ed ha fatto sorridere di tenerezza Seconda Figlia è questa bustina per mettere le letterine  per Babbo Natale. Ne scrivete ancora? Io no, ho smesso tanto, tantissimo tempo fa tanto non mi portava mai quello che volevo. Ma chi lo sa, forse quast’anno è il momento di farlo.

What really made me crack, and made Second Daughter smile with tenderness,  was this little envelope intended to keep letters to Santa. Are you still writing them? I gave up many, many years ago because he was never bringing me what I wished for. But who knows, it could be the right moment to start again.

Dolce al cioccolato - ‘Chocolate cake’

Non mangio più glutine da qualche mese, e finalmente le mie condizioni fisiche sono drasticamente migliorate.
Sono sempre alla ricerca di ricette semplici e gustose. Sto sperimentando con varie farine ( e vari gradi di insuccesso) per arrivare a farmi un pane accettabile, ma per i dolci è più facile. Questa torta è stata vincente con i miei figli che l’hanno trovata squisita. Provatela anche voi, è veloce e di sicuro effetto.

I have been on a gluten free diet in the last few months and at last my health has drastically improved.
I am always looking for easy and tasteful recipes. I am experimenting with various flours (and various degrees of failure) in order to bake an acceptable loaf of bread. It is easier with cakes. This for instance has been approved by my children who found it delicious. Try it, it is a quick and effective recipe.

                                                    Dolce al Cioccolato

100 g di cioccolata in pezzi           50 g di margarina           50 g di olio di mais o burro
3 uova             1/2 bicchiere di zucchero             1/2 bicchiere di polvere di cacao
1/2 cucchiaino di lievito in polvere

Sciogliere il cioccolato con la margarina, aggiungere l’olio/burro e poi lo zucchero. Unire le uova e poi il cacao setacciato col lievito.
Versare in uno stampo imburrato di circa 18 cm di diametro, col fondo ricoperto con un disco di carta forno.
Cuocere in forno già caldo a 180 a per circa  20-25 minuti. Non vi preoccupate se il centro è ancora un po’ morbido. Servire freddo, volendo con un po’ di panna.

                                                    Chocolate cake


100 g dark chocolate           1/2 c margarine       1/2 c corn oil or butter
3 eggs               1/2 c sugar         1/2 c cocoa powder        1/2 tsp baking powder

Melt chocolate and margarine, add oil/butter and sugar. Add the eggs and then the sifted cocoa and baking powder.
Pour into a buttered cake pan with a diameter of about 18 cm and the bottom covered with a round of parchment paper.
Bake in a heated oven at 180°C for 20-25 minutes. Do not worry if the center is still wobbly.
Serve cold, with cream if you wish.

Pioggia - ‘Rain’

Non ha fatto che piovere, una pioggia persistente, noiosa, continua. Si esce di casa perché si deve, ma domenica vi assicuro che per strada si vedevano pochi ardimentosi. Vivo vicino al fiume Arno e dalla finestra ne vedo le acque limacciose che corrono verso il mare.
It has been raining and raining, an insistent, continuous, boring rain. We get out of home beacuse we must, but I assure you that you could see very few brave people around last Sunday. I live near the river Arno and from my windows I can see its muddy waters running toward the sea.


Quando piove così tutti pensiamo all’alluvione del ‘66 e ci chiediamo se sia questa le ‘prossima volta’.
When it rains so much we all think of the  ‘66 flood and we wonder if this is going to be ‘next time’.



Quando piove in questo modo sento un senso di angoscia e il desiderio di rintanarmi in un posto caldo e luminoso. Ieri c’è stato un breve sprazzo di sole sicchè sono uscita per prendere una boccata d’aria e sorvegliare il fiume.
When it rains so much I feel anxiety and the wish to shut myself in a warm and bright place. Yesterday the sun came out for a short while so I went out for some fresh air and to check on the river.


C’era un airone in cerca di cibo. Passeggiava tranquillo ed ogni tanto, lesto, immergeva il becco nell’acqua e ne pescava un piccolo pesce. Ad un certo punto si è spostato, aprendo le sue grandi ali e la grazia del suo volo è stata spettacolare, un’immagine di pace e perfezione sullo sfondo delle acque spumeggianti.

There was a heron looking for food. He went quietly strolling on the bank suddenly dipping his beak in the water and fishing a small fish. At a certain point he moved opening his big wings and the grace of his flight gave a spectacular image of peace and perfection against the foaming waters.


Per terra un mare di foglie: l’inverno è alle porte.       On the ground, an ocean of leaves: Winter is looming.
 

Un insolito mercato - ‘An unusual market place’

Durante la settimana si è svolta a Firenze una manifestazione chiamata Florens 2010 per la valorizzazione dei beni culturali ed ambientali. L’idea di partenza nasce dalla riflessione che le attività culturali dovrebbero essere considerate una risorsa economica, e non solo un costo.
C’è stata quindi tutta una serie di eventi, culturali e non, ispirati al concetto di un nuovo Rinascimento. Alcuni sono stati ampiamente riportati dai giornali, come la posa del David di Michelangelo sul sagrato del Duomo, dove si pensava di porlo originariamente nel XIV secolo (tranquilli, era una copia di polvere di marmo e vetroresina) e successiva collocazione in Piazza della Signoria.
Oppure l’allestimento di un prato in piazza del Duomo, a ricordare il miracolo di San Zanobi. Questo Santo fu arcivescovo di Firenze nel V secolo e si adoperò alla diffusione del cristianesimo nella sua città. Narra la leggenda che quando il suo corpo fu traslato da una chiesa all’altra, un albero in Piazza del Duomo rinverdì miracolosamente.

An interesting event took place in Florence during this week: called Florens 2010 : basically an international week on cultural heritage and landscape, born from the idea that cultural activities should be seen as economical resources and not as mere costs.
Therefore there were a number of celebrations, cultural and not, inspired by the idea of a new Renaissance. Newspapers reported some of these, like the positioning of Michelangelo’s David first in front of the Duomo (where it was originally planned to be in the XVI century) and then in Piazza della Signoria (be reassured: it was a copy in marble powder and fiberglass).
Or laying a lawn in front of the Duomo to remember San Zanobi’s (Saint Zanobius) miracle. This Saint was archibishop of Florence in the V century and made every effort to make christianity accepted and spread in his town. There is a legend according to which when his dead body was moved from one church to the other, a tree in Piazza del Duomo suddenly turned green again.

L’unico evento a cui ho partecipato è stata la visita al mercato tenutosi lo scorso fine settimana in Piazza Strozzi dove c’erano gli artigiani. Veramente quello principale era in Piazza della Repubblica, ma lì c’era solo cibo (‘Che puzza di pecorino’ ha detto la mia amica Holly).
Insolita la collocazione di un mercato nel cuore della città e insoliti i banchi disegnati su modello ‘antico’, tutti di legno e tela.

I only took part in one of the events, meaning the visit to the market held in piazza Strozzi during last weekend where the craftsmen were exhibiting their wares.  To tell the truth the main market was in Piazza della Repubblica but there was only food (‘It stinks of cheese’ said my friend Holly).

Ordine - ‘Order’

Oggi è giovedì, sono in ritardo per lo ‘Spazio creativo’ ospitato da Kirsty.
Purtroppo la mia creatività oggi si limiterà a riordinare la confusione che ancora regna sovrana nella mia stanza dei giochi.
Non vado spedita come vorrei, perché mi fermo ad ammirare i tessuti, i ricami vintage e ad accarezzare le lane.
Dovrei rileggere cosa ho scritto qui.

Today is Thursday, I am late for the ‘My creative space’ hosted by Kirsty on Wednesdays.
Unfortunately i have to limit my creativity to tidying up my playroom.
My improvements are slow because I stop admiring the fabrics, the vintage embroideries and to stroke the yarns.
I should read what I wrote here.

Martedì dei Teasori – Tuesday’s Treasure - 16 Nov.

Questo è il mio tesoro odierno, un astuccio da lavoro probabilmente dell’800. Lo trovai da un antiquario sul Ponte Vecchio tanti anni fa e lo avevo dato a mia Madre da tenere nella sua collezione di avori antichi. Ora che mi sono trasferita definitivamente l’ho ripreso ed ogni tanto vado a guardarmelo.

This is my treasure today: a sewing kit probably made in the XIX century. I found it many years ago in an antique shop on the Ponte Vecchio; I gave this to my Mother to keep with her collection of old ivory little objects. Now that I moved, I took it back and sometimes I take time to look at it.

Guardo con meraviglia i piccoli oggetti contenuti in uno spazio così angusto: ditale, punteruolo, ago da lana, agoraio e forbicine.
I marvel at the little objects contained in such a tight space: thimble, awl (I am uncertain that this translates ‘punteruolo’), big needle, needle case and scissors.

Oggi doveva essere l’ultimo giorno ed invece sul blog di Clare ho letto che dalla prossima settimana il ‘Martedì dei Tesori’ si sposta da Melody.

Today had to be the last day, instead I read on Clare’s blog that starting from next week ‘Tusday’s treasures’ will move to Melody’s.

Giornata del non acquisto - ‘Buy nothing day’

Avete mai sentito parlare ‘Giornata del non acquisto’? Io avevo una vaghissima idea di cosa fosse ma come molte delle informazioni, notizie, idee di cui siamo quotidianamente bombardati, non ero mai andata a fondo e francamente non ci avevo fatto molto caso.

Leggo il blog di una signora canadase che si chiama Heather e vive su Lasqueti Island, sapete dov’è? Mi piace leggere quello che scrive, intuisco una vita con meno stress di chi vive in città, una vita più a contatto con la natura e le altre persone. Poco tempo fa ha scritto di uno scialle realizzato con lana locale, filata e tessuta a più mani. Questo scialle è della comunità, da passare in giro a coloro che hanno bisogno di conforto.

Vi potete immaginare una cosa simile in città? Minimo lo scialle andrebbe in giro sporco e bisunto (e chi lo laverebbe?‘non è mica mio’) sempre che andasse in giro e non sparisse perché perso, venduto o chissà cos’altro.

Did you ever hear of ‘Buy nothing day?’ I had a very vague idea of what it is, but since every day I feel bombarded by many ideas, informations and news, I never really investigated and quite frankly I didn’t put my mind into it.

I read the blog of a Canadian lady called Heather who lives on Lasqueti Island, do you know where it is? I like to read what she writes, I sense a less stressful life than those who live in towns, a life more in touch with nature and people. A short time ago she wrote about a shawl made with locally produced wool, spun and woven by many hands. This shawl belongs to the community, to be worn by those in need of comfort.

Can you imagine something like this happening in a town? To say the least the shawl would go around dirtier and dirtier (who would wash it? ‘It is not mine’), provided that it didn’t disappear, sold, lost or whatever.

Per tornare al tema di questo post, Heather parla della sua vita frugale e di come sia possibile ridurre le proprie necessità all’essenziale. Parla anche di altre persone che seguono questo modo di vivere (vedere l’articolo completo qui), accontentandosi di meno e vivendo una vita più serena.
Concetto strettamente legato al downshifting, di cui hanno scritto Simone Perotti o la mia amica Solindue.

Going back to the topic of this post, Heather speaks of her frugal life and of how it is possible to reduce one’s necessities to the essential. She also mentions other people that follow this way of life (see her post here), that are satisfied with very little and live a more serenely. 
This concept is closely related to downshifting, that has been described by Simone Perotti and my friend Solindue (blogs in Italian).


Forse sono pronta anche io. Traslocando da una granda casa ad un appartamento di minori dimensioni, ho dovuto liberarmi di molte cose legate al mio passato e che non hanno più un posto né nella mia casa né nella mia vita. Quindi ho cominciato anche a comprare meno e a valutare cosa sia necessario davvero e cosa no.

Insomma, sto riducendo il mio ‘istinto del possesso’.

Perhaps I am ready too. Moving from a big house to a smaller apartment I had to get rid of many things linked to my past and that have no more place either in my home or my life. Therefore I also started to buy less and to evaluate what is really necessary and what it isn’t.

In short, I am reducing my ‘instinct of possession’.

Penne alla Bella Donna - ‘Lovely Lady’s penne’

Qualche giorno fa ho incontrato la signora Marisa. Era tanto che non la vedevo e l’ho trovata sciupata, l’ombra di se stessa, spenta. Una sorpresa, certo, ma considerando che è fra i settanta e gli ottanta, prima o poi me lo dovevo aspettare.

Sempre curatissima, però, con una bella borsa rossa e sandali coordinati. Ma il fuoco che le bruciava dentro, non l’ho proprio visto.
Aveva sposato un compagno delle elementari di mio padre. Come si usa qui, i vecchi amici continuavano a incontrarsi con regolarità, mentre la vita andava avanti: matrimoni, nascite dei figli, adolescenze, altri matrimoni (dei figli), altre nascite (dei nipoti), e chi ce l’ha fatta ha vissuto anche le adolescenze dei nipoti.
Chissà se nell’al di là continuano ancora a vedersi, e che cosa gli sarà rimasto da dirsi. Intanto le vedove continuano a vedersi nell’al di qua, tranne mia madre che si è sempre rifiutata perché considera queste riunioni oramai un contare i sopravvissuti.
Ho sempre avuto la sensazione che si incontrassero per abitudine; era più che altro un gruppo di ‘compagni di merenda’, non ho mai avuto la sensazione che ci fosse quell’amiciza vera, profonda e complice, che fra loro si chiamassero quando avevano bisogno di aiuto o che si interessassero veramente a quel che succedeva nella vita degli altri.
La signora Marisa era molto più giovane di tutti loro, almeno una decina d’anni. Intelligente, brillante, piena di spirito, l’ho sempre ammirata anche per come sosteneva e appoggiava il marito, un pessimista nato per cui tutto era drammatico: ‘ Via, via, Gastone’ gli diceva facendogli coraggio. ‘Oh Marisina’ le rispondeva lui, quasi seccato. Ma di fatto, si calmava.
Un anno andammo in vacanza insieme, le due famiglie. Prendemmo a noleggio un caicco in Grecia, in un periodo in cui ancora si arrivava nei porti e l’unica barca era la nostra o quasi. C’erano tre persone di equipaggio: Lefteri, il capitano, e il suo secondo, un individuo che non sorrideva mai e che mi intimidiva parecchio. E poi un tipo gioviale, rotondo che portava un cappello di tela floscio legato con uno spago intorno al mento e che per il suo incedere ballonzolante venne prontamente ribattezzato Bagonghi. Chiassà come si chiamava veramente.
Mia madre e la signora Marisa cucinavano per le due famiglie. Una sera la signora Marisa venne fuori con le penne alla Puttanesca. Questo mi provocò allora molto imbarazzo. Avevo quattordici anni, sapevo vagamente cosa significasse e con certezza che la parola non era da ripetere.
Ma trovai le penne deliziose, e questa è la mia versione.

Tanto per chiarire, la Bella Donna del nome non è la pianta.

Penne alla Bella Donna (x 4)

500 g di penne (ci piace abbondare)
400 g circa di polpa di pomodoro
3 acciughe sott’olio o un cucchiaino di pasta d’acciughe
2 denti d’aglio, pelati e grattati
1 cucchiaio di capperi
1 manciata di olive nere, denocciolate e tritate grossolanamente
1+2  cucchiai di olio
1 cucchiaio di timo secco
1 cucchiaio di origano secco
un bel trito di basilico e prezzemolo (facoltativo)
sale, pepe

Scaldare 1 cucchiaio di olio, scioglierci le acciughe e far brevemente saltare l’aglio (non deve scurire). Aggiungere le erbe secche, e dopo circa un minuto completare col pomodoro, le olive ed i capperi. A me piace far sobbollire la salsa piano piano per un’oretta, affinché tutti i sapori si amalgamino ma se siete di fretta e la polpa di pomodoro non ha quel sapore metallico delle conserve in scatola, potete anche ridurre a dieci minuti.
Intanto cuocete la pasta ben al dente (devo dirvelo?). Assaggiate la salsa, aggiustate di sale, unite il pepe a piacere, ed infine conditevi la pasta, cospargendo di erbe fresche e mescolando bene.
Il formaggio non ci vorrebbe, ma ‘de gustibus non est disputandum’.

The Lovely Lady’s penne (serves 4 people)

500 g penne (or other short pasta) – quantity for an entrée

about 400 g canned tomatoes

3 oil preserved anchovies or a teaspoon of anchovy paste

2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped

1 tablespoon capers

1 handful of black olives, pitted and roughly chopped

1+2 tablespoons of olive oil

1 tablespoon dried thyme

1 tablespoon dried oregano

1 tablespoon finely chopped basil and parsley (optional)

salt and pepper to taste

Warm 1 tablespoon of oil, add the anchovies till they dissolve and then briefly sauté the garlic (it must not burn). Add the dried herbs and after about 1 minute add tomatoes, capers and olives. I like to simmer for about 1 hour, but if you are in a hurry and the tomatoes are of good quality, 10 minutes may suffice.

In the mean time cook the pasta ‘al dente’ (need I tell you this?). Taste the sauce, add salt and pepper as needed and pour on the penne. Serve immediately.

Cheese is not needed for the recipe, but if you like it…why not?

Rosso - ‘Red’

Qualcuno mi ha chiesto dove sia finito il lavoro che ho cominciato a settembre e che ho mostrato qui.

L’ho completato, dopo aver disfatto un paio di volte la parte superiore che non mi soddisfaceva ed aver meditato sulle maniche che non erano comprese nel disegno originale (Interweave Knits Fall 2009), ma che avevo deciso di aggiungere visto che avevo ancora lana sufficiente.

Somebody asked me what happened to the knotting that I started in September and about which I posted here.

It is finished after I unraveled the upper part a couple of times because I wasn’t happy with it, and after long meditation about the sleeves that were not included in the original project (Interweave Knits Fall 2009)., but that I wanted to add since there was enough wool left.

Eccolo: la modella è un po’ ‘legnosa’ tiene le mani conserte invece che nelle maniche, ma si riesce comunque ad avere un’idea di come sia. E’ un cardigan caldissimo ed è perfetto per questi primi freddi.

And here it is: the model is somewhat ‘woody’, she keeps her arms folded, but it is anyway possible to have an idea of the finished item. This is a very warm cardigan, perfect for these first cold days.

Sempre in tema di rosso, vorrei mostrare alcune foto che ho fatto durante il mio recente viaggio in California.

Un altro tesoro – Another treasure

Qualche tempo fa mia madre, che ben conosce la mia passione per tutto quanto è tessile, mi ha regalato questa scatolina:

La scatoletta mi pare troppo piccola per contenere spolette di filo, magari era per gli spilli.

San Martino – Indian Summer

L’estate di San Martino arriva immancabile, di solito tra la fine di ottobre e metà novembre. Una vera estate di San Martino dovrebbe, a rigore, accadere dopo i primi freddi, ma non sempre è così dal momento che oramai le temperature sono in media più alte su tutto il pianeta.

Narra infatti la leggenda che Martino, non ancora santo, viaggiasse con un tempo orribile (era già caduta la neve), quando all’improvviso incontrò un povero così povero che non aveva di che coprirsi e tremava di freddo. Mosso a compassione, Martino estrasse la spada e divise in due il suo mantello per darne una metà al poveretto. Il Signore lo ricompensò mandandogli qualche giorno di clima mite.

Saint Martin’s Summer never fails to arrive, usually between the end of October and the first half of November. A real Saint Martin’s Summer should occur after a first frost, but nowadays it is not always so since the temperatures have in average arisen everywhere on the planet.

The tale of Martin, not yet a saint, tells that he was travelling by a horrible weather (snow had already fallen), when he suddenly met a poor man, so poor to be sparingly clothed and trembling with cold. Martin took such pity on him that he drew his sward and cut in two pieces his cloak, one of which he donated to the poor. To compensate this act of kindness, God sent a few days of sweater weather.

Nel nord America questi giorni si chiamano Indian Summer. Ci sono varie spiegazioni per il nome, ma secondo quella che mi piace di più in questo periodo gli indiani nativi americani mettevano al riparo i raccolti di zucca e mais.

In North America these days are called Indian Summer. There are various explanations of the name, but the one I favor says that this was the period in which Indian Native Americans harvested their crops of squash and corn.

A Firenze si tiene la Fiera dei Pastori che ha antichissime origini perché già nel Trecento per San Martino (11 novembre) si teneva la ‘Fiera dei Panni di Lana’. Oggi vi ho fatto una breve visita, in conseguenza del fatto che la mia amica blogger Seurasaari è venuta fin dalle Alpi per l’occasione, con delle amiche appassionate tessili. E’ stato emozionante incontrare dal vivo questo gruppo di giovani signore di cui avevo letto e girare con loro fra i banchi di lane, di articoli di abbigliamento tessuti, lavorati a maglia, in feltro. Non ho avuto tempo di visitare anche la sezione alimentare della fiera ma sono sicura che Seurasaari ne farà un reportage completo.

The Fiera dei Pastori (Shepherds’ Festival) is held in Florence, where on the occasion of Saint Martin’s day (on the 11th of November) dating as far as the XIV century there was a ‘Festival of Woolen  Cloths’. Today I paid a short visit, since my friend Seurasaari came from the Alps for the occasion, with some of her textile friends. It was exciting to meet in person this group of young ladies about whom I had read, and walk with them among the booths of wool and clothing: knitted, weaved, felted. I had no time to visit the food section of the festival, but  I am sure that Seurasaari will write a complete report.


Le mie nuove amiche mi hanno portato dei regali inaspettati e piacevoli: un paio di orecchini, un tipico dolce delle loro parti chiamato zelten entro uno dei cestini fatti all’uncinetto dalla ‘Nonna con gli occhi cerulei’.

My new friends brought me some lovely, unexpected gifts: earrings, a typical cake of their area called zelten that was in one of the sweet baskets crocheted by the ‘Grandmother with the cerulean eyes’.


Spero che la prossima volta avrò più tempo per loro, mi hanno lasciato un caldo senso di amicizia.

I hope that next time I will have more time to spend with them, they left me a warm feeling of friendship.
