Every day seems a holiday. The first time that I came here I thought it was a special occasion till my son told me that no, it is like this every day. I wonder on what they live, maybe on charity, probably little suffices to them and they like this kind of life.

I like to stroll along what is left of the Venice canals. Perhaps someone doesn't know that this marshy area was reclaimed at the beginning of the XX century by Mr. Abbot Kinney, almost only mentioned as a tobacco magnate while in fact he did several things, including extensively travelling at the end of the nineteenth century and learning 6 languages. He was enchanted by the Italian Venice and wished to recreate its magic in an amusement park: there were restaurants, an aquarium, a ball room, a miniature railroad and most of all gondolas and gondoliers imported from Venice.
Read its story here. As the automobiles became more popular, it was felt that streets were more necessary than canals. Therefore most of them were filled, and the 1929 Depression contributed to the decay of this attraction. It was an uninterrupted decay till 1992 when the canals were at last restored.
Today the Venice canals are a very enjoyable walk and you can see some very beautiful and desirable houses.

RispondiEliminaI have heard of the place but didn't realise it was actually modelled on Venice - very interesting, and I love that last picture (wouldn't mind living there!) Glad you're having fun. Watch out for those young, studly body builders!

RispondiEliminaIt looks like a really fun place to visit - one thing I love about California is that there seems to be such a freedom to choose to live your life the way you want to.

It looks like beautiful weather you are having on your holiday and lots to see and discover. I hope you are having a lovely time visiting with your son. x
RispondiEliminaI used to think your pictures of Florence were so romantic partly because of the place, but now I can see that it is your photographer's eye that makes all places beautiful and romantic.
