Oggi sono stata all'Otis College of Art and Design per vedere la mostra 'Doin'It in Public: Feminism and Art at the Woman's Building'.

Today I went to the Otis College of Art and Design to see the exhibition  'Doin'It in Public: Feminism and Art at the Woman's Building'. I can say that I had no idea of what I was going to see, but I was attracted by the association feminism/art.

Feminist Studio Workshop (FSW) critique with Susan King. The Woman's Building has been a center for feminist art open in Los Angeles from 1973 to 1981. It was a non profit institution that also had an educational purpose. It was born from the effort of three women artist, tired that the artistic world was nearly exclusively a male one.  For instance, a study of pieces of art exposed at LACMA pointed out that over 500 were made by men, about 200 anonymous and only 5 (five!) by women.

The three artists thought that the development of feminine art couldn't be disjointed form the
women's movement. By looking at the displayed documents, beyond the mere provocation I was struck by the great passion and determination that the members of this art movement put in what they were doing.

  3. That sound like a very interesting exhibition! I took a couple of art history classes in University and my professors reminded us of this fact too - that what we think of as art history is mostly based on the works of white male artists throughout history. Both women and minorities were not represented in what we think of as the great works of art. Good to see initiatives like this that aim to bring a better balance!
