Doni - ‘Gifts’

Pochi giorni prima di Natale ho ricevuto un pacchettino che attendevo con impazienza. Con Kirsty avevavmo deciso di sorprenderci con una pagina tessile. Lei aveva diligentemente svolto il suo compito, nonostante i numerosissimi impegni con la sua famiglia (4 figli in tenera età); ne avevo intravisto una piccolissima immagine sul suo blog, ed ero molto curiosa.
Io tra viaggi, un lavoro da spedire in Australia ed un po’ di pigrizia ero terribilmente in ritardo. Oltretutto avevo anche avuto un problema di ispirazione: a volte le idee mi vengono copiose, altre faccio fatica ad essere soddisfatta da un progetto. E se non ho ben chiaro in testa cosa voglio ottenere, i risultati sono scadenti.
Tutto questo posticipare però alla fine non è stato negativo perché lo scambio è avvenuto nel periodo natalizio rendendolo ancora più festivo.

A few days before Christmas I received a parcel that I was impatiently waiting for. Kirsty and I had decided to surprise each other with a textile page. She diligently carried out her task in spite of her various engagements with her family (4 very young children); I had seen a sneak peak on her blog and I was very curious.
I was terribly late considering trips, a work to be sent to Australia and a little laziness. Furthermore I had an inspiration problem: sometimes ideas arrive abundant, others I struggle before being happy with a project. And if it is not clear what I want to achieve in my mind, the results are poor.
All this procrastinating in the end wasn’t negative because the exchange happened during the Christmas period therefore it was more festive.


Come spiegare l’emozione avuta: una pagina pensata e realizzata per me, un’opera unica che oltretutto portava il mio nome scritto sopra. L’ho messa sul camino per poterla guardare tutti i giorni.
How to explain the emotion I had: a page thought and made for me, a unique work that moreover had my name on it. I put the page on the mantelpiece so that I could look at it every day.




Non so se qualcuno che non crea possa capire il valore di un oggetto fatto a mano: l’ispirazione, l’elaborazione dell’idea in qualcosa di fattibile, la scelta della tecnica, dei materiali e dei colori, l’investimento del tempo. Infine la realizzazione che deve riflettere la concezione del risultato finale, e che quindi comprende errori, fare e disfare, possibili insoddisfazioni.
Forse per questo mi piace pubblicare foto di quello che faccio: non tanto per sentirmi dire ‘Brava!’ ma perché portare avanti un progetto è un vero e proprio parto, e la sua conclusione è un raggiungimento appagante.
Questo è quello che ho mandato alla mia amica, un’interpretazione della Provenza in cui vive.

I do not know if someone who doesn’t create can understand the value of a hand made object: the inspiration, the processing of the idea into something feasible, the choice of technique, materials and colours, the investment of time. Then the execution that has to reflect the conception of the final result, therefore including mistakes, the doing and undoing, possible dissatisfactions.
Maybe this is why I like to publish pictures of what I make: not really to be told ‘Well done!’ but because carrying out a project is a downright labour and its conclusion is a fulfilling achievement.
This is what I sent to my friend, an interpretation of Provence, where she lives.
