Etole japonaise…

…se vogliamo dirla in italiano: sciarpa giapponese. Seguo da qualche tempo Lucy ed il suo coloratissimo blog, pieno di idee e d’ispirazione. Un giorno ha scritto questo post su una straordinaria (per me) sciarpa fatta all’uncinetto.

….if we want to say it in English: Japanese scarf. Lately I have been following Lucy and her very colorful blog, full of ideas and inspiration. One day she wrote this post on an extraordinary (for me) crocheted scarf.




Da questo blog ho viaggiato su internet leggendo altri post su questa sciarpa, per esempio su l’ Atelier de Marie oppure su quello di Ellen. Date un’occhiata anche a Ravelry. Io ho seguito un tutorial in francese, da cui il mio titolo odierno, che è stato però nel frattempo cancellato. Ho trovato questo da Elizabeth che mi pare la stessa cosa.

From this blog I travelled online reading other posts on this scarf, for instance the one written on Atelier de Marie or the one on Ellen’s blog. Have a look on Ravelry as well. I followed a French tutorial, that explains today’s title, that has been deleted in the mean time. I found this one at Elizabeth’s that looks the same thing to me.




E’ un ottimo sistema per finire gli avanzi, la lana grigia per esempio devo averla conservata qualcosa come 35 anni. Mi piacerebbe provare con uno di quei filati che sfumano da un colore all’altro, senza avere la necessità di cambiare la lana ad ogni giro.

It is a very good way to finish up leftovers. I think that I kept the grey wool for over 35 years. I would like to try with one of those yarns grading from one color to the other without the necessity of changing the wool at every row.

Il mare di Aracne

Devo confessare che per i miei pochi contributi a ‘The Best’ sono stata lasciata pienamente libera di scegliere l’argomento che più mi piacesse (tranne naturalmente il numero di Natale).
Quando la nostra capa Sol’ ci ha chiamati al lavoro, quasi mi aspettavo un post scriptum che mi esonerasse dallo scrivere sul tema proposto: ‘Tu, Aracne, puoi scrivere quello che ti pare’. Come al solito, in virtù di una lunga amicizia. Invece no, anzi mi è stata esplicitamente richiesta una ricetta marinara.

Panico.
Come mai? Perché dai tempi del liceo non ho più scritto su un soggetto suggerito od imposto? Oh, quei temi dai titoli lunghissimi e devastanti, a volte poco chiari, con uso di parole terrificanti come lirica, narrativa, voce interiore (del poeta), connubio, eroe cristiano-romantico.
Come si fa a 18 anni a scrivere su: ‘La sagace mediazione di Mecenate tra la politica di Ottaviano e la pleiade dei letterati e dei poeti del tempo….’ ed anche ‘ Si disegni a rapidi tratti il quadro delle circostanze storiche e dei valori socio-culturali che indussero gli “intellettuali” dell’epoca ad aderire attivamente alle direttive della politica statale…’ .
Almeno, io no ci riuscivo, la sola lettura del titolo talora mi paralizzava la mente e il braccio.  Tanto che uscendo dalla prova scritta di italiano all’esame di maturità, con un gran sospiro di sollievo mi ripromisi che ‘mai più’ avrei svolto un tema.

E’ proprio vero che prima o poi dobbiamo affrontare i fantasmi del nostro passato che spuntano impietosi da quegli armadi in cui li avevamo premurosamente e vigliaccamente rinchiusi insieme a qualche scheletro. La legge del contrappasso?
Dunque, con coraggio: il mare.

Il mare per me è la Versilia. Ne ho visti altri di mari, in giro per il mondo. Forse più puliti, più turchesi, più salati,  più esotici. Ma per me: Versilia = mon amour.  Ci andavo da bambina, i miei nonni vi si erano trasferiti quando il nonno si era ritirato dagli affari, pensate un po’ nel 1957. Ci ho passato delle estati lunghissime, ne ricordo la luce accecante, la passeggiata di Viareggio, poco la spiaggia, perché i nonni non ci andavano.
Il Forte dei Marmi era un luogo sconosciuto, ne sentivo parlare dalla sorella di mia madre che ci andava col marito. Erano amici di Sergio (Bernardini), frequentavano la Bussola dei tempi d’oro, ma erano anche amici di una coppia che aveva un celebre ristorante a Viareggio. La signora mi fece vivere attimi di vero imbarazzo, era strabica ed io non lo sapevo. Sicché un giorno mi parlò guardando da un’altra parte e siccome io non rispondevo mi trattò anche duramente: che ne sapevo che secondo lei mi stava guardando fissa? La mamma ottenne da loro la ricetta del famoso caciucco ed era davvero squisito. Se l’avessi, ve la porporrei.
Invece vi suggerisco un’altra ricetta di famiglia:

Seppie con gli spinaci  (x 4)

circa 700 g di seppie pulite e tagliate a listarelle
un cipolla piccola
due denti d’aglio
4-5 acciughe sott’olio
un pizzico di peperoncino, sale, olio
500 g di spinaci surgelati

Scaldate un paio di cucchiai d’olio in una padella, aggiungete le acciughe e mescolate finché non siano disfatte. Unire la cipolla tritata, e far cuocere per 7-8 minuti; aggiungere l’aglio tritato e un bel pizzico di peperoncino continuando la cottura per altri 3-4 minuti.
Versare nella padella le seppie, mescolando vigorosamente, abbassare la fiamma  e cuocere per circa mezz’ora. A questo punto unire gli spinaci scongelati e tagliuzzati grossolanamente, mescolare il tutto e continuare la cottura per un’altra mezzoretta. Se necessario aggiungere un pochino di acqua. Non scordate di assaggiare per verificare sia la cottura delle seppie che la salatura.
A mia mamma piace la cucina ‘in bianco’ ma se gradito si può aggiungere del pomodoro.
Se avete la fortuna che ne avanzi un pochettino, buttateci  un poco di pomodoro e del riso, non ve ne pentirete (i miei figli mi dicono: ‘Mamma, sei la regina degli avanzi’).

Only in English – The Stylish Blogger Award

Since this is meant for the international community, I will write in English only, and my Italian followers will (I hope) forgive me.
I was so surprised the other day when reading this post: the lovely Aidan wrote some VERY nice words about my blog. Surprised and flattered. It took me a while to realize that she had rewarded me with the Stylish Blogger Award.

I know that it is not the same as the Nobel Prize, but it doesn’t matter: for someone who always got low grades at school, this is quite an achievement.
So, what I have to do now is write 7 things about myself, then choose 7 blogs that I want to forward the Stylish Award to. Let’s start:

1. Aidan made me curious, so I had to look  which Feng Shui element I  am: soft wood. It mainly means that I am fond of green wood, plants and flowers. Maybe this is why I love my orchids so much. Not that I am very good at keeping other kind of houseplants.
I also like to walk, if in the nature even more (although snakes frighten me to death and I am always very cautious, and if at all possible I will have 1 or 2 people walking in front of me).




2. I badly wanted to study ballet. I do not know why, my mother never sent me to ballet school. Now she doesn’t even remember that when my Grandfather gave me some money, I bought a pair of red satin ballet shoes and that after I had done my homework I would put some music on and dance for myself till I dropped exhausted. This is the only regret that I have and the only thing in my life that I would change.

3. I had to give up ballet because  I have many problems with my back. It happened a few weeks ago that I went to a Fundraiser Valentine Dance where this group was performing L’Atelier de Danse. They dance historical dances and the evening’s theme was Rag Time Dances. I danced all night and I am going to attend this school in the near future. I want to learn how to dance the Maxixe: 

4. As years pass I give more and more value to feminine friendship. I met some extraordinary women in the past years, whose wisdom, humanity and honesty I admire. They give me support when I need it, they listen to my troubles, they give me advice but most of all, we laugh together. Some of them lived in Florence for a while, then left; some others I met when abroad, and some live in Florence. It is a net.

5. I am madly fond of Indian cooking. I went a few times to India with my mother, we have been to extraordinary places where there are no tourists, I learned to eat with my fingers (it didn’t take long), to quarrel with a tuk-tuk driver, to bargain prices. It was fun, fun, fun, a country where I feel at ease and that I would like to know more.

6. There was a time in which I was so insecure that I only wore dark blu, grey and brown. This saddened my paternal Grandfather, who wished the I would dress in brighter colors. This is what I do now, I try to put color not only in my life but also on myself. The epitome was the Solstice Cardigan: I think that I never had anything flashier than this.

7. The definition of ‘stylish’ that i found on the web is: having elegance or taste or refinement in manners or dress.
I agree, It doesn’t depend on fashion for me. The blogs that I find stylish, that I have been following for a while, and to whom I am passing the award are hereunder, in no particular order:

Neki Desu @ A movable feast for her extraordinary expertise in dyeing and  weaving. Sometimes I do not understand what she means, and I am begging her to give me a class but she is too modest to accept.
Ellen @ LA is my beat who is an indefatigable  crocheter (among many things) that I read with enormous pleasure also because she keeps me updated about what is going on in Los Angeles
Ingrid @ The fable of the Table who took my hand and is leading me into a photographic adventure, where I am able to ‘meet’ with some other welcoming and fun people that I would have never met otherwise

Che soddisfazione - ‘Much to my satisfaction’

Ho finalmente completato la Tenda Rossa, quella di cui ho parlato in questo post. Metri e metri di strisce cucite insieme e foderate, la dimensione finale piuttosto impegnativa, tanto da necessitare un notevole sforzo di braccia per muovere il tessuto sotto la macchina da cucire.

I finally completed the Red Curtain, of which I spoke in this post. Meters and meters of stripes, sewed together and lined, the final dimension rather demanding, so that it was necessary quite a physical strain to move the fabric under the sewing machine.


Ho ricevuto molti utili suggerimenti, fra cui quello della mia amica Jasmine, quilter professionista, che dalla lontana Bangkok mi ha consigliata di interrompere ogni tanto l’andamento delle strisce per dare interesse.
Così, inaspettatamente e senza logica alcuna le strisce improvvisamente diventano verticali per poi tornare orizzontali.
                  
I received many suggestions, the best one from my friend Jasmine, a professional quilter, who from far away Bangkok advised me to interrupt the direction of stripes from time to time, just to add interest.
So, unexpectedly and with no reason whatsoever, suddenly the stripes run vertically and then go back to horizontal.

A me poi la simmetria piace poco e quindi i due pannelli sono volutamente diversi. Siccome la finestra è molto grande, la tenda appare avere un suo movimento e non dà l’impressione di essere una ‘toppa’.

Moreover I am not fond of symmetry so the two panels are deliberately different. Since the window is quite big, the panels seem to have a kind of motion and don’t give the impression of a ‘patch’.

Calzini per me - ‘Socks for me’

Ho fatto calze e calzini per tutti, con timore, esitazione, sbagliando, ricominciando. Adesso ho messo a punto un modello per me ideale, facile da ricordare e di veloce esecuzione.

Mi ha molto aiutato questo libro perché mi piace lavorare a maglia e provare le cose via via che proseguo nel lavoro. E finalmente ho deciso che fosse tempo di sostituire i miei rammendatissimi calzini, diventati pesanti e scomodi a furia di aggiungere toppe.


I made socks for everybody, with awe, hesitation, making mistakes, starting again. Now I came up with a pattern that is ideal for me, easy to remember, quick to knit.


This book helped me a lot, because I love to knit and try on what I am doing as I proceed in the work. And finally I decided that it was time to replace my very mended socks, that became heavy and uncomfortable for the too many patches.






Adesso sto giocando con del tweed grigio. Sono già al secondo tentativo, il primo golf l’ho disfatto perché mancava di ogni grazia e proporzione. Sto pensando a Girl Friday, per ora ho provato il punto che mi pare molto interessante. Per altri esempi di creatività vi invito a visitare Kirsty.


Now I am playing with some gray tweed. The first attempt was unravelled because had no grace or proportion. I am thinking of Girl Friday , I tried the stitch and it looks very interesting. For more creativity I invite you to visit  Kirsty.
   

Tessitura Jacquard – Jacquard weaving

Una decina di giorni fa ho seguito un workshop di progettazione di tessuto operato per la creazione di una borsa ‘gioiello’. Il corso si è tenuto alla Fondazione Lisio, da due insegnanti abili e competenti: una specializzata nell’ elaborazione del disegno, l’altra nella tessitura vera e propria.

About 10 days ago I attended a workshop concerning designing a figured fabric for the production of a ‘jewel’ bag. The course was held at Fondazione Lisio by two  able and competent teachers: one is specialized in the elaboration of design, the other one in weaving.



Come prima cosa ci sono state mostrate delle squisite borsette realizzate a suo tempo per una nota casa di moda. I disegni sono stati elaborati alla Lisio e il relativo tessuto è stato poi eseguito a mano. Oggetti da collezione, veramente. E’ stato molto intetressante questo viaggio dall’idea iniziale al prodotto finito, per quanto fatto velocemente: avevamo altro da fare!

At first we were shown some exquisite little bags conceived some time ago for a well known fashion company.  The designs were developed and the relative fabric handwoven at Lisio.  Really collectors’ items. This trip from the initial idea to the finished product was very interesting, although a quick one: we had other things to do!




Abbiamo poi fatto un altrettanto viaggio veloce attraverso le varie armature ed i tessuti operati in modo da poter decidere come elaborare le nostre idee per il tessuto che volevamo realizzare. Questo a sinistra è il disegno da cui sono partita. Col senno di poi, avrei fatto meglio a fare qualcosa di meno dettagliato.

Later we made an equally quick trip through the various weaves and figured textiles so that we could decide how to elaborate our ideas for the fabric that we wanted to obtain.
I started from the drawing on the left. With the wisdom of hindsight a less detailed pattern would have been better.



Una volta elaborato e messo in carta il disegno, abbiamo proceduto a piccole tessitura di prova per permetterci di fare correzioni ed avvicinarci via via al prodotto finito ideale. Questo è il mio primo campione, dove tutto era sbagliato: armature, proporzioni, numero di trame.

Once the drawing had been elaborated and point-papered (?), we made some sample weavings so that we could make corrections and approach to the ideal finished product. This is my first sample, everything was wrong: weaves, proportions, number of wefts.




Ci sarebbe voluto un altro giorno perché fossi interamente soddisfatta. Una volta ottenuto un campione del quale eravamo sufficientemente contente siamo passate alla tessitura. Tattandosi di in tessuto per una borsa, ho ripetuto il disegno in modo da avere un davanti ed un dietro.

I would have needed another day to be completely satisfied. Once a sample of which we were sufficiently happy was produced we started weaving. Since the fabric was meant for a bag, the pattern has been repeated twice.

Solstice Cardigan…

    …è finalmente finito e mi sono dimenticata di pubblicerne le foto. Sono soddisfatta del risultato anche perché ho fatto qualche piccola modifica al modello originale, adattandolo al mio gusto.

Di questo cardigan mi piacciono:
-  la vestibilità: un pochino aderente, quel tanto che basta per sottolineare il punto vita e la linea dei fianchi.
- la leggerezza: nonostante l’ampio collo ho usato solo 500 g di lana
- il colore: se penso che per buona parte della mia vita ho vestito di grigio e di blu mi rendo conto di come abbia volontariamente rinunciato alla gioia del colore. Cosa non fa fare una bassa autostima!

 
…is finally finished and I forgot to publish the photographs. I am satisfied about the result also because I made a few modification to the original pattern, adapting it to my personal taste.


What I love in this cardigan:
- wearability: a little close fitting, enough to enhance the waistline and the hips
- the lightness: in spite of the wide collar I only used 500 g of wool
- the color: if I think that for the great part of my life I dressed in gray and dark blue I realize who I voluntarily gave up the joy that color gives. What a low self esteem had me doing!

Freschi di fattoria – Farm fresh

Primo Figlio, che come oramai sapete tutti vive a Los Angeles, mi ha parlato di un servizio interessante al quale ha aderito. In pratica riceve ogni settimana una scatola di frutte e verdura:
- prodotta localmente
- organica
- di stagione

First Son who by now all of you know lives in Los Angeles, spoke to me about an interesting service to which he subscribed. In few words every week he receives a box containing fruit and vegetables that are:
- locally produced
- organic
- in season


Ho sottolineato il fatto che la riceve A CASA? Dunque viene ridotto lo stress della spesa che, non so voi, ma ogni tanto mi piglia. E poi c’è un altro vantaggio, da non sottovalutare e cioè il fatto che quando uno si trova le verdure già disponibili in cucina, non si deve tanto rompere la testa su cosa mettere in tavola. Solo sul ‘come’.

Did I emphasize the fact that he receives these goods AT HOME? Therefore the stress of shopping that sometimes gets me is considerably reduced. There is another enormous advantage and that is that when you have the vegetables available in your kitchen, you do not have to rack your brains about what to prepare for dinner. It is only a matter of ‘how’.

Questa azienda opera da 18 anni, quindi non solo sono ben organizzati ma sono anche degni di fiducia. Ricordo che anni fa, quando ero una mamma superoccupata, mi sono fatta qualche volta mandare a casa la spesa da un grande catena di supermercati. Ho dovuto smettere di ordinare frutta e verdura poiché sembrava mi mandassero quasi solo gli scarti.
Insomma, è una gran trovata e potrebbe funzionare anche da noi se avessimo più il concetto del ‘servizio al cliente’.

This company has been operating for 18 years, therefore they are not only well organized but also reliable. I remember that a few years ago when I was a superbusy Mummy, sometimes I had my shopping delivered by a big supermarkets chain. I had to give up ordering fruit and vegetables because it seemed that I received almost all the leftovers.
In short it is a great idea and could work in this country too if the concept of ‘customers’ service’ was more widely understood.
