Il topo di Brunella - ‘Brunella’s mouse’

Brunella è una persona che conosco da moltissimo tempo e soltanto molto superficialmente (per ora). Lei ballava, insegnava danza e faceva spettacoli mentre io muovevo i primi passi nella danza classica, circa una decina di anni fa. Poi ci siamo perse di vista, l’ho incontrata per caso e mi ha detto che illustrava libri per bambini.

Il suo blog è in realtà l’ingresso ad un mondo di fantasia che mi incanta. A volte viaggio nel suo portfolio solo per la gioia di perdermi nella magia dei suoi personaggi, i suoi fiori, i suoi pesci. I suoi disgeni mi danno serenità, ci ritrovo l’ingenuità dell’infanzia e la sua meravigliosa innocenza.

 
Brunella is a person that I have known for many years and only superficially (up to now). She was dancing, teaching dance and performing in a time when I was only approaching ballet, about 10 years ago. We lost contact, then we met by chance and she told me that she was a children’s books illustrator. 


As a matter of fact her blog is the entrance to an enchanted, fantastic world.  Sometimes I travel through her portfolio only for the joy of losing myself in the magic of her characters, her flowers, her fish. Her drawings give me serenity, I find in them the naivety of infancy and its splendid innocence.

Più volte ho pensato di trasporre la fantasia di Brunella nel mio mondo fatto di tessuti e filati. L’altro giorno ho visto questo: le dita hanno cominciato a prudermi e il cuore a cantare contento.

Many times I thought of transposing Brunella’s fantasy in my world of textiles and fibers. A few days ago I saw this: my fingers started hitching and the heart to happily sing.


Non ho bisogno di molte parole per illustrare il processo creativo che ho seguito e che mi ha portato alla realizzazione di questo copriquaderno.

I do not need many words to explain the creative process that I followed and that brought me to make this book cover.

La passata - ‘The headband’ - Tutorial

Ogni promessa è debito e dunque ecco il tutorial della passata di cui ho scritto qualche giorno fa. E’ il primo che scrivo, spero di essere chiara.

Filato
Ho usato un avanzo di lana merino, e probabilmente ne ho usata una trentina di grammi. E’ una lana per la quale sono consigliati ferri di 4 o 5 mm, ma non è molto importante: io l’ho usata doppia con dei ferri di 6 mm per avere un bel tessuto denso.

A promise is a promise, therefore here is the tutorial for the headband about which I wrote a few days ago. It is the first one that i write, I hope to be clear.


Yarn
I used a merino wool, a leftover, and probably used around 30 grams (a little over 1 oz). I have no idea of the gauge, but it is not that important. Normally you would knit this wool with needles between 4 and 5 mm (US 6 and 8). I doubled the yarn and used a 6mm needle (US 10) in order to have a dense knit.




Montare 18 maglie con un avvio avvio provvisorio.
Primo ferro: 3 maglie rovescio. 12 maglie diritte, 3 maglie rovescio.
Secondo ferro: 1 maglia passata a diritto, 2 maglie diritte, 12 maglie rovescio, 3 maglie diritte.
Terzo ferro: 1 maglia passata a rovescio, 2 maglie rovescio, 12 maglie diritte, 3 maglie rovescio.
Continuare a lavorare alternando il secondo e il terzo ferro, tranne che per le dodici maglie centrali su cui verrà eseguita la trecccia, secondo questo schema:

Cast on 18 stitches with a provisional cast on.
Row 1: purl 3, knit 12, purl 3
Row 2 : sl1k, knit 2, purl 12, knit 3
Row 3 : sl1p, purl 2, knit 12, purl 3
Continue alternating row 2 and 3, except for the 12 middle stitches where you will work the braid as follows:




Lavorazione della treccia
Mettere 4 maglie su di un ferro ausiliario e lasciarle in attesa sul davanti del lavoro. Lavorare a diritto le 4 maglie successive, poi le 4 maglie in attesa, poi le 4 maglie sul ferro di sinistra.
Eseguire 3 ferri come indicato più sopra (cioè ferro 2, ferro 3, ferro 2). Siamo di nuovo sul davanti del lavoro.
Lavorare 4 maglie diritte, poi mettere 4 maglie sul ferro ausiliario e lasciarle in attesa sul dietro del lavoro. Lavorare a diritto le 4 maglie successive, poi le 4 maglie in attesa.
Proseguire per 3 ferri ‘normali’ e poi ricominciare la sequenza.

Working the braid
Put 4 stitches on an auxiliary needle keeping them waiting on the front of your work. Knit 4 stitches, then those on the auxiliary needle, then the 4 on the left needle.
Work 3 rows as indicated (i.e. row 2, row 3, row 2). You are again on the right side.
Knit 4 stitches, put 4 stitches on an auxiliary needle keeping them waiting on the back of your work. Knit 4 stitches, then those on the auxiliary needle.
Continue with 3 ‘normal’ rows and then start again with the braid’s sequence.


Mia figlia ha una testa piccola, quindi a 43 cm di altezza ho chiuso con una chiusura a tre ferri. Non ho trovato spiegazioni in italiano, se necessario guardate qui il video (si chiama Three needle bind off).
Naturalmente se siete brave potete fare una chiusura invisibile. A me non viene bene, sicché preferisco  chiudere in altro modo.

My daughter has a small head so at 43 cm (17 inches) I made a 3 needles bind off.
Of course if you are good at it you can close with a kitchener stitch. I am not, therefore I prefer to bind off in another way.

Giocando con l’uncinetto - ‘Playing with crochet’

Ho lavorato al progetto ‘Etole Japonaise’ ma devo dire che questo filato Noro non mi ha per niente soddisfatta. Per lo meno, non per questa applicazione. Trovo che il passaggio di colore sia troppo brusco, forse perché il fiore è troppo grande. Certi accostamenti non vanno, in particolare questo verde/arancio proprio non mi piace. E nel complesso il filato una volta lavorato risulta in colori opachi e senza luce.

Questa, naturalmente, è un’opinione molto personale.



I worked on the project ‘Etole Japonaise’  but quite honestly this Noro yarn so far has not satisfied me, i.e. not for this use. I find that the change of color is too abrupt, maybe because the flower is too big. Some of the combinations are not working, in particular this orange/green really displeases me. And in general once the yarn has been worked, its colors seem dull and without light.


This, of course, is my very personal opinion.



Così ho disfatto tutto e provato un altro modello. Questi piccoli esagoni mi sembrano funzionare meglio, l’effeto generale è migliore anche se sempre un po’ spento. Non so perché quando Ellen ha postato sul suo blog, la combinazione fiore giapponese/filato Noro sembrava perfetta.

Therefore I unravelled everything and tried another pattern. These little hexagons seem to better work, the general effect is superior but the color always kind of dull. I do not know but when Ellen posted on her blog, the combination Japanese flower/Noro yarn seemed perfect.




Nel frattempo ho finito un paio di calzini che avevo cominciati
durante il viaggio. Mi sembra che io mi stia raffinando nella fattura, questi sono proprio deliziosi. La mia amica Cinciarella mi ha chiesto quando trovo il tempo di fare tutte queste cose: un paio di ore dopo cena. 3 o 4 ore ogni volta che tengo compagnia alla mamma, alla fermata dell’autobus, …insomma, esco sempre con i ferri. E poi lavoro veloce.

In the mean time I finished another pair of socks that I started while I was travelling. It seems to me that I am becoming more refined in the technique, and these socks look lovely to me.
My friend Cinciarella wants to know when I find the time of making all the things that I make: a couple of hours in the evening, 3 or 4 hours when I keep company to my Mother, at the bus stop,…I never go out without my knitting. Also, my fingers are very quick.

Piccoli lavori - ‘Little knits’

Sono rientrata con la 'febbre creativa'.  Ispirata dalla lana che ho comprata a Los Angeles, ho cominciato a lavorare su di una nuova Etole Japonaise, come minacciato. I colori sono splendidi, anche se per mio gusto preferisco usare questo tipo di filato per piccoli progetti.

I came home with the 'creative fever'. Inspired by the wool that I bought in Los Angeles, I started working on a new Etole Japonaise, as I threatened. The colors are magnificent, but according to my taste I prefer to use this kind of yarns for small projects.  


Ho comprato quattro gomitoli, per me, le mie figlie e la ragazza di Primo Figlio. Vorrei non fare lo stesso modello per tutte noi, e cercherò qualcosa di diverso. Ma sono stata impaziente di cominciare  e di vedere coi miei occhi il risultato, che mi pare semplicemente entusiasmante.

I bought four skeins, for me, my daughters and First Son’s girlfriend.  I would like to crochet different patterns for each one of us, but I was impatient to start and see for myself the result, that seems to me simply exciting.


Se qualcuno conoscesse una variazione di questo scialle  o avesse un modello da suggerirmi, sarei molto lieta se me lo comunicasse.

If someone knew of a variation of this shawl or had a pattern to suggest I would be very grateful to be informed.


Intanto mia madre, la cui salute è sufficientemente soddisfacente, mi ha chiesto di farle un piccolo cappello per tenere in ordine i suoi capelli quando lavora (poco) in giardino. Ieri sono andata su Ravelry per trovare ispirazione e, sapete com’è, una cosa tira l’altra e sono capitata su questa fascia, creata da Prada.


In the mean time my Mother, whose health is satisfactory enough, asked me to knit her a little hat to keep her hair in place when she works in the garden (very little). Yesterday I went on Ravelry to find inspiration and you know how it is, one thing leads to the another, and I found the Prada’s headband.


Come mai mi era sfuggita? Ho eseguito diversi campioni, il che mi ha dato anche la possibilità di fare uno studio sulle trecce, i bordi, la relazione filato/grossezza dei ferri.


How can I have never seen this head band? I made several samples thus having the possibility of studying cables, selvages, gauge.

Lana e altro - 'Wool and notions'

Più spesso vengo a Los Angeles e meno frenetica sono nel mio desiderio di vedere assolutamente tutto. Così ieri me la sono presa comoda e sono andata semplicemente per negozi. Volevo comprarmi qualche gomitolo di Noro, per fare la Stola Giapponese ed ottenere un risultato più sfumato, come questo.


More often I come to Los Angeles and less frantic I am in my wish to see absolutely everything. So yesterday I took it easy and simply went window-shopping.I wanted to buy a few skeins of Noro to make the Etole Japonaise again and obtain a softer result like this one.


'Compatto' è un bellissimo negozio che offre una grande scelta di fibre preziose, raffinate e...molto costose.  
Il personale è sorridente ed accogliente, pronto a dare suggeimenti e consigli, c'erano tre o quattro signore che aspettavano pazientemente in fila il loro turno col lavoro in mano. Da una parte del negozio c'è una grande tavola intorno a cui altre donne erano intente in una lezione di qualche tipo.
E poi, naturalmente, libri, ferri, articoli vari e modelli già eseguiti.
Combinazione avevo indosso il mio Solstice Cardigan e mi sono crogiolata quando mi hanno fatto i complimenti.


'Compatto' is a fantastic shop offering a wide choice of precious, sophisticated and...very expensive yarns. The staff is very helpful and welcoming, ready to give suggestions and advise, there were 3 or 4 ladies patiently waiting their turn holding their knittings. In a corner they have a big table around which other ladies were attending a class of some sort.
And, of course, books, needles, notions and finished projects.
By chance I was wearing my Solstice Cardigan  and I reveled when I was complimented.

Pensieri - 'Thoughts'

Ho dormito male, scossa dalle immagine del Giappone  trasmesse dalla televisione.
Non posso non pensare a tutta quella devastazione, alla distruzione di ogni cosa.
Non posso non pensare alla morte, alle famiglie lacerate, disperse. Essere separati dai propri cari e non saperne la sorte.
Io sono qui, e penso ai miei a Firenze. Fossi a Firenze penserei a mio figlio e alla sua ragazza qui, in un'altra zona ad alto rischio sismico. Perché succederà anche qui, è inevitabile.

Durante la notte i pensieri e le sensazioni si accavallano, incontrollati.
Con la luce del giorno, so che devo concentrarmi su oggi, e non fantasticare sul futuro o a quello che non è successo.
Ho letto alcuni dei blog che seguo, questa frase di Rachel mi ha dato conforto:

My family is alive.  We are well.  We have love.  We are safe.

A volte dimentico che devo semplicemente essere grata.

By day light I know that I have to concentrate on today, and not on the future or on something that didn't happen.

Il giardino - 'The garden'

Sono stata a visitare, ancora una volta, il Getty Center, una delle opere architettoniche contemporanee più affascinanti fra quelle che conosco. Stavolta ho seguito il 'Garden Tour' ed è stata una sorpresa dopo l'altra.
Non è stato un esperto paesaggista o giardiniere a disegnare il magnifico giardino, bensì un artista di nome Robert Irwin.

Once again I went visiting the Getty Center, in my opinion one of the moste fascinating contemporary architectonic woks, among those that I know. This time I joined the 'Garden Tour' and it was kind of surprising to learn that the garden was not designed by a landscaper or a gardener, but by an artist called Robert Irwin.

Confesso che non conoscevo questo artista ma dopo la visita ho voluto saperne di più. Con la sua arte ha contribuito a definire il movimento 'West Coast Light and Space Movement' , esplorando come luce e spazio siano percepiti ed alterati dalla coscienza. I suoi interventi artistici sono mirati ad una stimolazione sensoriale e temporale. L'installazione nella foto ha un fronte di circa 12 metri, non l'ho vista personalmente ma credo sia difficile non avere qualche tipo di reazione solo a guardarla.

I confess that I didn't know this artist and I wanted to know more. With his art he contributed to define the 'West Coast Light and Space Movement' , by exploring how light and space are perceived and altered by consciousness. His artistic interventions are aimed to a sensorial and temporal stimulation. The above installation stretches for 48 feet, I have not seen it personally but I think that it is difficult not to have some kind of reaction just looking at it.

Tornando al giardino, Robert Irwin voleva creare per il visitatore un'esperienza che coinvolgesse vista, tatto, olfatto e udito. Così ha scelto piante non rare o particolarmente inusuali, ma il cui accostamento solleticasse l'attenzione per forma e per colore: i porpora intensi accostati agli arancioni, i verde mela con erbe bluastre, piccoli fiori rossi immersi nel verde che diventano evidenti solo quando si è molto vicini...


Going back to the garden, Robert Irwin wanted to create for the visitor an experience involving sight, touch, smell and hearing. Therefore he chose plants not particularly uncommon or unusual, but so that their combination would tickle the attention for shape and color: intense purples with oranges, apple greens with bluish herbs, little red flowers buried in green that become evident only when approaching...
 
Questa è l'acqua che scende lungo il sentiero che porta al piccolo bacino centrale: ogni volta che il sentiero incrocia il ruscello, il suono dell'acqua cambia per via della disposizione dei massi di roccia.

This is the water along the path going down to the central bowl: every time that the path crosses the stream the sound of the water changes thanks to the placement of the rocks.

Devo confessare che non avevo mai sentito parlare di questa marca di abiti e accessori. Creata dalle due sorelle Mulleavy nel 2005, ha avuto fin da subito un gran successo, ha vinto numerosi premi e ottenuto molti riconoscimenti.

I have to confess that I never heard before about this brand of clothing and accessories. The company was created by the two Mulleavy sisters in 2005, had great success from the start, won various awards and obtained several nominations.

Ieri siamo andati al Moca (la sede al Pacific Design Center) per vedere l'esposizione: Rodarte, States of Matter. Si tratta di una piccola esposizione di  una ventina di pezzi, niente di più, però è interessante per l'uso di  materiali diversi nella realizzazione degli abiti: tulle, garza, piume, tessuto di lana, vinile.
Altro punto di interesse è l'esposizione dei tutù disegnati per il film Black Swan, cosparsi di swaroski e piume. Questo è quello nero, ma naturalmente c'è anche in bianco e sono ambedue meravigliosi.

Yesterday we went to Moca (at the  Pacific Design Center) to see the exhibition Rodarte, States of Matter. It is a small exhibition of about 20 pieces, nothing more, but it is interesting to see the use of different materials employed in the making of the dresses: tulle, gauze, feathers, wool fabric, vynil. 
Another interesting feature is that the tutus made for the movie the Black Swan are on show, covered in feathers and swaroski. This is the black one, but of course there is a white one too, and both are magnificent.

Vado – I am going

Domani parto, sarò lontana per un paio di settimane. Vado a Los Angeles (qualcuno è sorpreso?) a trovare Primo Figlio. Come sempre prima di partire sono assalita da una leggera ansia, anche se naturalmente non ha niente a che vedere con quella che mi prendeva quando lasciavo i miei quattro figli piccoli.

I am leaving tomorrow for a couple of weeks. I am going to Los Angeles (is anyone surprised?) to visit First Son. Before I leave, I am taken by a certain anxiety although of course this is nothing if compared with the one that used to get me when I was leaving my four young children.



Avevo un lavoro che mi portava a dei noiosissimi viaggi in giro per l’Italia, a visitare clienti. Ogni partenza era un dramma di organizzazione familiare, anche perché su mio marito non potevo assolutamente contare (qualsiasi cosa lui ne dica adesso).
Un giorno trovai pure un cliente che manifestò il suo disappunto perché io non lo visitavo spesso come mio padre. Il quale, non solo non aveva quattro figli, ma aveva una moglie che si occupava di tutto quello che era quotidiano e domestico. Lo dico sempre, scherzando un poco, che per continuare a lavorare (con salario) mi ci sarebbe voluta una moglie…

 I had a work that necessitated frequent and very boring travels through Italy, visiting my customers. Every departure meant dramatic familiar organization, also because I couldn’t rely on my husband (whatever he says now).
One day I found a customer who expressed his annoyance because I wasn’t visiting as often as my father did. Who not only did not have four children, but had a wife dealing with everything that was day-to-day and domestic. I always say, joking a bit, but not that much, that in order to continue my (paid) work I would have needed a wife…
