Ce l’abbiamo fatta! - ‘We did it!’

Ieri c’è stata la cerimonia di consegna dei diplomi alla scuola internazionale che ha frequentato Seconda Figlia. Ha finito il liceo, la quarta ed ultima licenza liceale dei miei figli.

Finito con compiti a casa, colloqui coi professori, pagelle e compiti in classe: dopo 23 anni, praticamente una vita.

Yesterday was graduation day at the international school that my daughter attended. She graduated from High School, my children’s forth and last High school diploma.


I am finished with homework, teachers’ conferences, school reports and written tests: after 23 years, practically a lifetime.



Questi sono Seconda Figlia e suo cugino che parlano come rappresentanti di classe. La foto è sfuocata, ma è la più decente che io sia riuscita a fare, fra lacrime e batticuore.

Belli e sicuri di sè, sembrava che non avessero fatto altro nella loro giovane vita che parlare in pubblico.

These are Second Daughter and her cousin speaking as class speakers. The photo is out of focus but it is the best one that I managed to take, considering my tears and heart beating. 


Both handsome and self confident, they looked as if they had  spoken in public all their life long.


Indossavo una giacca di lino bianco di Laura Biagiotti, comprata tanti, tanti anni fa usata ad una fiera di beneficenza. Mi è sempre stata piccola, ma è graziosa, con un ricamo intorno alla bella scollatura.
Nemmeno con la mia super lente da esperta di tessuti sono riuscita a capire com’è fatto. Bisognerebbe vedere al rovescio, forse un giorno la curiosità avrà il sopravvento sulla pigrizia di dover ricucire la fodera.


I was wearing a Laura Biagiotti white linen jacket, purchased many, many years ago second hand at a bazaar. It has always been too small but it is a pretty thing, with an embroidery around the flattering neckline.
Not even with the magnifying  glass that I use for textiles I was able to understand how it is done. I should have a look at the back and maybe one day my curiosity will overcome the laziness of having to sew back the lining.


Mia madre ce l’ha fatta ad essere presente, ha stretto i denti come solo quelli della sua generazione sanno fare e si è presentata fresca di parrucchiere, nonostante la sua gravissima malattia. Una bella prova di coraggio e di determinazione, non si è persa un secondo della cerimonia che vedeva coinvolti i suoi due nipoti più giovani.

My mother was also present, gritting her teeth as only those who belong to her generation are able to do and she arrived fresh from the hairdresser in spite of her incurable disease. An admirable show of courage and determination, she didn’t lose one second of the ceremony that involved her two youngest grandchildren.













La sera c’è stata una cena dei ragazzi e dei loro invitati coi professori. Seconda Figlia era bellissima. Cuore di mamma? Giudicate voi.

In the evening there was the Prom: students, guests and teachers. Second daughter was very beautiful. Mother’s pride? Judge for yourself.

Cashmere? Yes, please!

Ho ritrovato in questi gionri la mia amica Nora che era presente a Terra Futura, una mostra-convegno di ecologia e sostenibilità volta a sensibilizzare il pubblico sul futuro del nostro pianeta.
Nora vive nel Chianti dove alleva capre cashmere. Le sue capre vengono impiegate fra l'altro per tenere puliti i campi abbandonati ed il sottobosco, ad un costo vicino allo zero, in maniera naturale e non inquinante. Dunque è il ritorno della pastorizia per la tutela del territorio. Nora è un vulcano e le sue iniziative sono molte: visitate il suo sito per saperne di più.


I had the chance of getting again with my friend Nora in the past days. She was exhibiting at Terra Futura, a show-convention about ecology and sustainability aiming to raise awareness on our planet's future.
Nora lives in Chianti were she raises cashmere goats. Among other things, her goats are used to keep abandoned land clean and clear undergrowth in forests, at a cost near to zero, in a natural and not polluting way. Therefore this is the come back of sheep farming for  land protection. Nora is like a volcano and her initiatives are many: visit her website (in English too) to know more.


Sapevo che produceva anche lana cashmire ma immaginate la mia delizia quando mi sono ritrovata davanti questo:

Le capre cashmere non sono tosate ma vengono pettinate una volta all’anno. La fibra che se ne raccoglie la potete vedere in primo piano a destra. Il sottopelo è poi filato e fatto in matasse. I colori sono naturali in tre sfumature di beige, tranne ovviamente il blu che è stato tinto con guado.

Cashmere goats are not sheared but combed once a year. The obtained fiber can be seen on the right in the foreground. The undercoat is then spun and wound in skeins. The colours are naturally in three shades of beige, except of course for the blue one that has been dyed with woad.


Non avevo mai lavorato col cashmere, né con un filato così fine. Così quando Nora mi ha chiesto di prepararle un campione, l’ho fatto con molta trepidazione ed un senso di sfida. Preparare il gomitolo usando l’arcolaio mi ha predisposto l’anima ad utilizzare questa lana così pura e così naturale quasi con un senso religioso.

I never knitted with cashmere or with such a fine yarn. Therefore when Nora asked me to prepare a sample, I obliged with much trepidation and a feeling of challenge. Making the ball using a yarn swift prepared my soul to work with such a pure and natural fiber almost with a religious feeling.

Una visita gradita - ‘An enjoyable visit’

Qualche giorno fa ho ricevuto un email da una blogger che ammiro moltissimo, Jeanine di Italian Needlework.
Jeanine risiede a Vancouver, scrive di ricamo con molta competenza tanto che sono rimasta molto sorpresa di scoprire che il suo mestiere è tutt’altro. La immaginavo come una signora anziana, ma in realtà è una giovane donna piena di energia, di curiosità e di interesse. Di sorpresa in sorpresa, è venuta a Firenze con la sua amica Giovanna di Tuttoricamo, un’altra giovane signora che nella vita si occupa di ben altro, ma che è animata dalla stessa pasione per il ricamo.


A few days ago I received an email from a blogger that I admire very much, Jeanine of Italian Needlework.
Jeanine lives in Vancouver, writes about embroidery with such great competence that I was very surprised to discover that her job is completely different. I imagined her as an old lady, but in reality she is a young woman full of energy, curiosity and interest. One surprise leads to another one, she came to Florence with her friend Giovanna of Tuttoricamo, another young lady that works in a very different field, but is equally animated by the same passion for embroidery.


La loro conoscenza mi ha intimidita perché amo il ricamo ma sono una rozza autodidatta e quello che so l’ho letto su internet. Queste due signore invece sanno tutto non solo della tecnica, ma conoscono le scuole, le ricamatrici, le tradizioni, i libri. Insomma che dire: sono l’enciclopedia del ricamo. Visitate il blog dell’una ed il sito dell’altra, vi renderete conto che non sto raccontando storie.

I was intimidated by their knowledge because I love embroidery but I am a rough self taught person and what I know I learned online. On the other hand these two ladies know everything not only about technique, but they know the schools, the embroiderers, the traditions, the books. In one word they are the embroidery encyclopaedia. Take the time to visit the blog of the one and the website of the other and you will know that I am not telling tales.

Le ho accompagnate ad una visita alla mia amata Fondazione Lisio dove siamo state accolte con il calore e la cortesia di sempre (c’è bisogno di dirlo?). Abbiamo visto in produzione un meraviglioso velluto azzurro polvere ed un pannello con trama broccata, due progetti su cui non posso dire niente ma che sono assolutamente squisiti. Cosa non sono capaci di fare in questo magico luogo.

I took them to visit my beloved  Fondazione Lisio where we were welcomed with the usual warmth and courtesy (needless to say). We saw the production of a magnificent dusty light blue velvet and a panel with brocated weft, two projects of which I can not speak but that are absolutely exquisite. What can be made in this magic place always amazes me.



Le mie nuove amiche mi hanno fatto dono di un piccolo asciugamano  proveniente dalla Sardegna, dalla cooperativa tessile SuMarmuri. Il motivo coi pavoni è tessuto a mano secondo un’antichissma tecnica detta ‘a pibionis’ (foto presa dal loro sito). Un’altra tradizione tessile che non conoscevo.

 My new friends gave me a little towel coming form Sardinia, produced by the little textile factory SuMarmuri. The peacocks pattern is hand weaved according to a very old technique called ‘a pibionis’ (the photo is taken from their website) . Another technical tradition that I wasn’t aware of.


 

Artigianato e Palazzo

Si tiene in questi giorni a Firenze una specialissima mostra di alto artigianato. Un centinaio fra i più bravi Maestri toscani, italiani (o anche stranieri ma che operano in Italia) si riuniscono nello splendido giardino di Palazzo Corsini, dando vita ad un week end all’insegna del bello e della creatività.
Ci sono stata ieri e lascerò che le immagini parlino per me.
  
Ho visto la tradizione e la tradizione interpretata in chiave moderna. Ancora una volta mi sono chiesta dove sia il confine tra artigianato ed arte.

A very special exhibition of high craftmanship is held in these days in Florence. About a hundred of the most talented Masters (Tuscans, Italians or foreigners working in Italy) gather in the magnificent garden of Palazzo Corsini giving life to a week end dedicated to beauty and creativity.

I have been yesterday and I will let the images talk for me.

I have seen tradition and tradition interpreted in a modern way. Once again I asked myself where the boundary between craftmanship and art is.

Qualcosa di estivo - ‘A Summery little thing’

Quando vado in America in genere torno con una o due riviste di maglia (cerco di contenermi) e nel 2008 avevo comprato un numero di Vogue Knitting dalla copertina irresistibile.

Questo cardigan mi ha fatto l’occhiolino per tre anni e finalmente gli astri si sono allineati in maniera favorevole e mi hanno concesso questa fortunata combinazione: filato, tempo, stagione.

Una descrizione si trova anche su Ravelry. L’autrice del modello, Deborah Newton, fa largo uso nei suoi disegni di punti operati. I suoi capi finiti sono come piccole sculture, piccoli capolavori.

Il punto da lei utilizzato sulle spalle è una bellezza, ma ho trovato difficile eseguirlo col cotone. Per cui ho fatto una variazione al modello…poteva essere altrimenti?

Ora l’estate può venire davvero, io sono pronta.


When I go in the United States generally I come back with 1 or 2 knitting magazines (I try to restrain from buying too much) and in 2008 I purchased an issue of Vogue Knitting with an irresistible cover.

This cardigan kept winking at me for 3 years and finally the stars lined up in a favorable way and I was offered this lucky combination: yarn, time, season.

You will find a description on Ravelry as well. The author of the pattern, Deborah Newton, uses many lace stitches in her designs. Her garments are like little sculptures, little artworks.

The stitch that she used on the sleeves is a beauty but I find difficult to knit it in cotton. Therefore I changed the pattern…is this a real surprise?


Summer can come, I am ready.

Biscotti alle nocciole - ‘Hazelnut cookies’

Ho fatto una sorta di esperimento, si vede che le stelle mi erano favorevoli perché questi biscottini sono assolutamente deliziosi, facili e veloci da fare.

1 uovo

300 g farina

100 g nocciole sgusciate, tostate e tritate grossolanamente

150 g zucchero (mi piacciono poco dolci, caso mai aumentate lo zucchero a 200 g)

150 g di margarina o burro a temperatura ambiente

1 pizzico di sale, un po’ di vanillina

1 cucchiaino raso di lievito

acqua o latte, quanto basta per tenere insieme l’impasto

Mescolare tutto insieme, ancora meglio se in un mixer. Non aggiungere troppo liquido, l’impasto dev’essere ben sostenuto. Fare una specie di cilindro aiutandosi con un pezzo di pellicola, chiudere bene e mettere in frigorifero per circa 1 ora.
Tagliare poi il cilindro in fette alte 1 dito, metterle sulla teglia e cuocerle per circa 25 minuti a 180°C.
Ne vengono circa una ventina.



I made a kind of experiment and probably the stars were looking upon me because these cookies are absolutely delicious, easy and quick to make.

1 egg

300 g flour

100 g shelled hazelnuts, toasted and roughly ground

150 g sugar ( I like not too sweet cookies, in case increase the sugar to 200 g)

150 g margarine or butter at room temperature

a pinch of salt, a little vanilla extract

1 teaspoon of baking powder

water or milk, just enough to keep the dough together

Mix all the ingredients, much better if in a food processor. Do not add too much liquid, the dough should be rather stiff. Using cling film, shape a kind of cylinder, close well and refrigerate for about 1 hour.
Cut the cylinder in slices about 1 finger high, put on a baking try and bake for about 25 minutes at 180°C.
You will obtain about 20 pieces.

Nel corso della mia uscita ieri mattina, sono capitata in un ufficio dalla cui finestra si godeva questa vista: i tetti di Firenze sono, a mio avviso, i più romantici del mondo.

During my errands yesterday morning, I went into an office and from a window I capt  ured this: the roofs of Florence are the most romantic in the world.

Where is David?

Ho letto la notizia online, ed ha subito attirato la mia attenzione.


L’iniziativa parte da Palazzo Vecchio che lancia una raccolta di fotografie per vedere dove si trova nel mondo il David di Michelangelo. Trovo divertente questa caccia al simbolo perché, va ricordato, per molte persone nel mondo la celebre statua è il vero simbolo di Firenze, non il giglio.

I read the news on line and it immediately attracted my attention.


The idea was born in Palazzo Vecchio who sponsors a collection of photographs in order to monitor where in the world the David of Michelangelo can be found . How amusing the hunt for this symbol looks, also because it must be remembered that for many people around the world this famous statue is the real symbol of Florence, not the lily.

Incertezza - ‘Uncertainty’

Sono giornate particolari, mi sento irrequieta, instabile, confusa.
Ondate improvvise di sentimenti mi travolgono, sballottandomi e lasciandomi tramortita, come quelle balene spiaggiate che sembrano appena respirare. Ho bisogno di creare per sentirmi in sintonia con me stessa, ma non posso creare se non ho equilibrio.

Guardo il mio tavolo da lavoro, pieno di tessuti, carta velina, un cartamodello appena tagliato, un paio di pantaloni da accorciare. Più lo guardo e meno ho voglia di fare. Ieri ho fatto la marmellata di fragole con una ricetta oramai colladudata da anni: è rimasta liquida, la mia negatività si è trasferita anche in cucina.


Passerà, lo so, tutto passa. Tornerà la primavera.

These are very special days, I feel restless, unstable. confused.
Sudden waves of feelings sweep me away, jerking me around and leaving me knocked out, like one of those whales thrown on the shore, that barely seem to breathe. I need to create to feel attuned with myself, but I can not create if I do not have some kind of balance.


I look at my working table, full of fabrics, tissue paper, a newly cut pattern, some trousers to shortened. The more I look and the less I want to do. Yesterday I made strawberry jam, following a fool proof recipe that I have been doing for years: it didn’t set, my negativity moved also in the kitchen.


It will pass, I know, everything will pass. Spring will be back.
