Ho lavorato assiduamente in questi giorni ad un progetto che ho maturato negli ultimi tempi.
Tutto è cominciato quando ho avuto in dono questi ricami da parte di mia madre. Lavandoli ho visto che cadevano a pezzi e non sapevo proprio cosa farci. Chiaramente se volevo conservarli dovevo metterli su di un supporto.

In these days I have been working very hard at a project that I have been brewing for a while. 
It all started when my mother gave me these embroideries. When I washed them I realized that they were falling to pieces and couldn’t be used unless I put them on a support.

Sono un’assidua lettrice di questo blog  e ho già scritto di come mi affascini il lavoro di Mary Jean. Come logica conseguenza, e su incoraggiamento della stessa Mary Jean, ho deciso di sperimentare il Bojagi cucito a macchina per fare una tenda. In questo modo riuscirò anche ad utilizzare parte della mia collezione di vecchi ricami raccattati qua e là ad un prezzo molto basso, e a far spazio per nuovi acquisti (ho in programma una viaggio in Giappone ad Aprile).


I am the fond reader of this blog and I already wrote how Mary Jean’s work fascinates me. As a logic consequence and being encouraged by Mary Jean herself, I decided to experiment machine sewn Bojagi and make a curtain. This will also enable me to use part of my embroideries collection, pieces found here and there at bargain prices, and to make space for new purchases (in my future plans there is a  trip to Japan next April).

Victoria ha anche lei un blog interessante su cui ho trovato un tutorial semplice e comprensibile. Date un’occhiata, perché le creazioni di Victoria sono originali, ben fatte e a volte strappano il sorriso.

Il lavoro progredisce lentamente perché certi pezzi hanno bisogno di essere non solo applicati ad unaltro pezzo di tessuto, ma anche rammendati. Guardate com’è bella questa piuma imperfetta ricamata su di uno strappo, ispirata da Jude di Spirith Cloth.

The work progresses quite slowly because some pieces need not only to be sewn on another piece of cloth, but also need mending. Look at this beautiful imperfect feather embroidered on a rip, inspired by Jude of Spirith Cloth.

Lavorare con metri e metri di tessuto in questi giorni ancora caldi non è davvero il massimo. Tuttavia oggi ho completato un pezzo abbastanza grande da fotografare.

Working with yards and yards of fabric in these hot days of August is not entirely pleasant. But today I completed a piece big enough to take a picture.

Sardegna

Seconda Figlia ed io siamo state due settimane nell’isola di Santo Stefano: la struttura che ci ospitava non era delle migliori, ma l’isola è splendida.  La Sardegna è una regione ricca di cultura e di storia, vorrei tornarci prestissimo per fare una vera visita. Conserva ancora molte tradizioni tessili, per esempio la tessitura e il ricamo, come scritto da Jeanine nel suo blog.




Second Daughter and I have been 2 weeks on Santo Stefano Island: the structure where we were staying wasn’t really good, but this little island is beautiful. Sardegna (or Sardinia in English) is a land rich in culture and history, I would like to go back very soon and pay a ‘real’ visit. It is a place full of textile traditions: for instance weaving and embroidery, as written by Jeanine in her blog.


  

L’acqua del mare è incredibilemete trasparente, permettendo di vedere chiaramente l’abbondanza di alghe.
Sea water is incredibly transparent so that you can easily admire the abundance of sea weeds.


    

Non avevo con me né la lente né il martello che il bravo geologo dovrebbe portarsi dietro, ma ad occhio direi che le rocce visibili erano rappresentate dai classici graniti sardi. Le forme scavate dall’erosione del vento sono fantastiche.
I didn’t have the magnifying glass nor the hammer that a geologist is supposed to carry around, but as far as I could see the visible rocks were the typical Sardinian granite. The wind erosion has been creative some terrific shapes.

La vacanza può essere un successo, oppure no. Quel che è veramente importante è che permetta una pausa dai pensieri, così che al ritorno si possano affrontare i vecchi problemi guardandoli da un’altra prospettiva e con un occhio diverso.
Io sono tornata con la testa piena di progetti, di programmi e di energia. Un po’ come quando si comincia un nuovo anno.

Holidays can be a success, or not. What is really important is that they allow a pause in the flow of concerns, so that coming back the old problems can be looked at with a different eye and tackled from another perspective.
I came home the head full of projects, plans and energy. A little bit like a New Year resolution.
            

In vacanza - ‘On holiday’

Lunedì vado in vacanza per quindici giorni con Seconda Figlia: sole e mare, non troppo lontano da casa visto le condizioni di salute di mia madre.
Non vedo l’ora di partire, sono molto stanca. Le ultime settimane sono state dolorose e pesantissime. Cerco di non avere aspettative su questa vacanza, ma credo sia nella natura umana farlo e quindi mi auguro di tornare non solo riposata, ma anche piena di  nuova energia e con la mente sgombra dal passato.

Next Monday I am going for 2 weeks of holiday with Second Daughter : sun and sea, not too far from home considering my Mother’s poor health.
I can hardly wait to leave, I am very tired. The last weeks  have been painful and very heavy to bear. I try not to have expectations on this holiday but I think this belongs to human nature and therefore I hope to come back not only rested but also full of a new energy and with a mind cleared of the past.


Quando comincio un nuovo lavoro a maglia, di solito mi ispiro a qualcosa che vedo su internet o in un giornale, poi gioco con la lana finché non sono soddisfatta di quel che sto facendo. Ieri invece ho comprato questo modello che si chiama Summer Solstice. E’ il secondo che compro, quello precedente si chiamava Solstice Cardigan, si vede che c’è qualcosa che mi lega alla parola ‘solstizio’.

Mi piace il processo creativo, lo trovo stimolante e di grande soddisfazione. Ma in certi momenti seguire le istruzioni scritte da qualcun altro senza farsi troppe domande, è davvero un riposo.

When I start a new knit, usually I am inspired by something that I have seen online or in a magazine, then I play with the wool till I am satisfied with what I am making. Yesterday instead I bought this pattern that is called Summer Solstice. It is the second pattern that I buy, maybe there is something that bounds me to the world ‘solstice’.


I do love the creative process, I find it stimulating and it gives me great satisfaction. But sometimes it is really relaxing to follow the instructions written by someone else without asking too many questions.
