What could I say about Marilyn Monroe that hasn’t been said yet? This year is the fiftieth anniversary of her death.
I was really young, barely 9 years old but I have a very vivid memory of that day. I didn’t know much of that beautiful and scandalous woman, but I was struck by her lonely death. That she left her lifeless and unprotected body, that I imagined naked under the sheet, caused in me a feeling of fragility and violated intimacy that is still with me.
The Museo Ferragamo dedicates to Marilyn a fabulous exhibition: photographs, videos, personal and stage clothing, and of course shoes.
Marilyn loved a very simple model, a court shoe with 11 cm (4,33 inches) heel that she bought in New York or had dispatched from Italy. As a matter of fact she never met Salvatore Ferragamo.
Do you remember the images of President John F. Kennedy’s birthday at the Madison Square Garden?
So sensual. How must have felt poor Jacqueline watching this kind of performance that didn’t leave much space to the imagination.
The exhibition is splendid, with classic works juxtaposed to the diva’s photographs, and it ends with a surprising and very moving reenactment of a bed on which a human shape lies under a white sheet.
The windows of Palazzo Feroni dressed for this occasion are one more beautiful than the other. And what about shoes? You would wish to have them all.
