La moglie di - ‘The wife of’

For 18 years I have been married to a man whose family for a long time has been locally well known and reputed prestigious. For some people it still so, therefore in the years I have been very often (too often) introduced as ‘wife of..’. I would have been less vexed if the introduction had been ‘Blandina, the wife of…’, but completely loosing my identity really annoyed me. I never understood if such a presentation was meant to honour more the introducer rather than me.

This morning I met XX, one of my husband’s collegues  I can not say that there was a a very intimate relationship with him and his wife, but we have known each other for 25 years, sometimes we all went out together and I am the daughter’s  confirmation godmother. Can you believe that introducing me to his present partner he said: ‘This is the ex wife of…’.
So now I am cooked, I changed label, but I am not yet a person.

The labels in the picture are made out of cotton, simple but very pleasant, ordered following Cinciarella’s advice.
If you do not know her have a look at her blog: she is a woman full of ideas and creativity, indefatigable and photographer extraordinaire, I do not know where she finds the time to do all that she does.

I am preparing a small installation for an exhibition to which I was invited to participate (did I already mention it?), therefore I spend many hours working on something that I can not show yet and I feel that my posts lack my usual creativity. Nevertheless here is a sneak pick, I am using denim and learning to concentrate on a  project wider than customary. But I miss hopping from one thing to the other, sometimes I feel as if I had clipped wings.

Caught by raptus, inspired by the book that I showed a few days ago, I fished from my stash 5 pieces of fabric and started sewing. Who knows where am I  thinking of going with all these new dresses!

  2. oh I'm too far to long not been on your beautiful blog.
I feel for you about the inappropriate behavior of XX.
It must give a good feeling if you are invited by an organization to join an exhibition. Good luck with your work and preparations for it. The photos are looking promising, I'm really looking forward to the unveiling of your creations!

  3. AAArgh, I would be annoyed by that introduction too. It's really quite ridiculous! And you've definitely nailed it when you say that it's more about the introducer (trying to show off that he knows so-and-so AND his ex-wife) than the person being introduced. In fact it speaks volumes about them...

  4. Machism at his very best! Oh no, there is one more step: introducing you as the mother of...
    Grrr!
For us, you are Blandina, don't worry.
    This exhibition must be exciting!

  5. I know how you feel. A while back someone said to me: "I have just realized who you are...."
Excitedly I waited for: you are that clever/talented quilter (she is a quilter)
No, she said: "You are the wife of...."
    Very deflating.

  6. oh, i feel for you! the day before our wedding i told the minister that i didn't want them to introduce us as "mr & mrs. his first name & last, but rather use both of our first names. it resulted in an hour long lecture of how to be a good wife. i was young & didn't know better. two years later i took back my own names & we are both much happier for it!
the mystery grows around your project...

  7. How frustrating to just be seen (to some) as the wife of... and then as the ex-wife. Very rude and says a lot about the person doing the introduction. As always, I love seeing your creativity with fabric. So exciting that you were asked to be part of the exhibition and it, I hope we'll get to see photos of the finished installation! Like you, I like to hop around between projects and work a little at a time at each one. So I can imagine you feel a bit restricted right now. You'll be so proud once it's done though! xx

  9. I am sure that those people would rather be known for themselves rather than the partner of someone. Your fabric choices are very pretty, I'm sure you will enjoy wearing all of them:)

  14. I understand. Here on Salt Spring my partner is famous and much loved. I am only an adjunct. Sometimes people say to me, "You must keep him healthy so he will go on cooking us great food." You can imagine what I think of them!
