Seta ed eucalipto - ‘Silk and eucalyptus’

Cosa può succedere secondo voi se una persona va al mercato e trova un raso pesante di pura seta a 3 euro al metro?
In your opinion, what can happen if someone goes to the market and finds heavy satin silk for 3 euros/meter (about 5 dollars)?



E se poco più avanti trova dei rami di eucalipto praticamente a saldo?
And if a little further the same person finds eucalyptus branches for a pittance?

 

Fare esperimenti di tintura con le piante mi dà una profonda emozione: mi sento un po’ alchimista ed un po’ strega. Il mistero dei fagotti di tessuto in cui sono strettamente avvolte foglie, gambi e quanto necessario, solletica la mia curiostà, che peraltro devo tenere a freno perché ci sono dei tempi da rispettare.

I am deeply excited by experimenting dyeing with plants: I feel a bit like an alchemist and a bit like a witch. I am frantically curious about the mystery of the cloth bundles in which are tightly bound leaves, stems, and whatever is necessary, but I have to be patient because the process occurs at its own pace.

Questa volta ho provato ad estrarre il colore dalle foglie di eucalipto. Ogni tanto sbirciavo sollevando il coperchio e l’acqua diventava sempre più scura. Speravo che sarebbe successo, ed in fatti ho ottenuto un bel colore arancio, in cui ho poi immerso due pezzi di seta, il primo semplicemente annodato, ed il secondo legato come un salame.

Potete vedere qui sotto i risutati: il primo campione è poco interessante, avrà bisogno di un intervento successivo. Il secondo è un po’ meglio, di grande effetto se indossato, ma tutto sommato piuttosto insipido.

This time I tried to extract the colour form the eucalyptus leaves. From time to time I took a peek by lifting the lid and the water was becoming darker and darker. I was hoping that it would happen and in fact I had a lovely orange colour in which I immersed 2 pieces of silk, one simply tied with knots, and the other one bound with string (as a salami, we say in Italian).
Hereunder you can see the results: the first sample is not very interesting, it will need a further intervention. The second one is a little better, of great effect if modelled, but after all quite bland.

 

Per gli ultimi due ho usato un metodo oramai a me più familiare di ‘cottura’ al vapore. Il terzo è stato ottenuto con le foglie di eucalyptus (in realtà il colore è più rossastro), mi piace l’effetto delle foglie e dei gambi.

For the last 2 I used the more familiar method of steaming. The third one was obtained with eucalyptus leaves (in reality the colour is more reddish), I lke the effect of the leaves and the stems.



L’ultimo è quello che preferisco, ottenuto aggiungendo bucce di cipolla e pochissimo ferro. L’unico cruccio è non riuscire ad eliminare le grinze dal tessuto con la stiratura.

The last one is the one that I like best, obtained by adding onion peels and very little iron. The only regret is not being able to eliminate the creases with ironing.
