Poca ispirazione - ‘Little inspiration’

Nelle ultime settimane sono stata meno presente in Bloglandia, sia nello scrivere post sia nel visitare i blogamici. Risento ancora del periodo natalizio che ha mi ha costretta ad una pausa dal momento che la mia ‘stanza dei giochi’ era stata temporaneamente trasformata in sala da pranzo. Inoltre terremoti emotivi hanno squassato il mio equilibrio. Oramai ho imparato ad avere pazienza e a lasciare fare al tempo, ma non mi sento ancora me stessa.

During the last weeks I hev been less present on Blogland whether in writing posts or visiting blogfriends. I am still under the influence of the Christmas period that obliged me to a pause since my ‘playing room’ was temporarily transformed into dining room. Furthermore emotional havocs violently shook  my balance. By now I learned to be patient and let time heal my wounds, but I am not feeling myself yet.

Come tutte le mamme risento anche degli umori dei miei figli. Prima di alzarmi stamani pensavo come ognuno di loro sta attraversando un periodo intenso tra lavori impegnativi e decisioni da prendere in merito alla direzione da dare alla loro vita.
Forse deve essere così, un periodo di riflessione per tutti noi, una presa di coscienza delle nostre realtà per poi ripartire con nuovo coraggio e nuovo slancio.

Like all mothers I suffer from my children’s moods. Before getting up this morning I was thinking how each one of them is in the middle of an intense time caused by either demanding jobs or decisions to be taken about the direction to be given to their lives.
Perhaps this is how it has to be, a time of reflection for each one of us, a becoming aware of our realities before starting again with a new courage and a new boost.

Ho finalmente finito un gilet per il mio viaggio in Giappone in aprile: l’ispirazione mi è venuta dal libro Folk Vests di Cheryl Oberle.
At last I completed a vest for my trip to Japan next April: the inspiration came from the book Folk Vests by Cheryl Oberle.


                 

Su un blog (non ricordo più quale) ho letto una frase che suona press’a poco così: il futuro non è mai limitato da quello che possiamo vedere in questo momento. Lo prendo come un incitamento ed un augurio, anche perché nel frattempo ho ricevuto il nuovo programma dei corsi del Textile Support (fare click sull’immagine).

On a blog (I do not remember which one) I read this phrase: the future is never limited by what we can see right now. I took it like an encouragement and an invitation also because in the mean time Textile Support sent me the program of the new courses (click on the image).

Vecchie mani - ‘Old hands’

Ieri pomeriggio sono stata con un gruppetto di socie della AILO presso una casa di riposo dove abbiamo cominciato un programma di intrattenimento. Ci incontreremo un pomeriggio al mese per lavorare a maglia con gli anziani, faremo delle piccole coperte che potranno tenere in grembo e riscaldarsi.

Yesterday afternoon with a little group of AILO members I went to a retirement home where we started an entertaining program. We are going to meet once a month to knit with the elderly, we will be making afghans for them to keep warm.


Timorose, siamo state introdotte in una grande stanza dove già ci aspettavano. Se avevamo qualche esitazione su come rompere il ghiaccio, è stata presto dissipata: le signore ci hanno accolte con sorrisi e desiderio di unirsi al nostro progetto.

Somewhat timorous, we were taken in a big room where they were already waiting for us. If we had some hesitation on how we would break the ice, it was soon dispelled: the ladies welcomed us with smiles  and a wish to join our project.


La signora Erika, svizzera di origine, è rimasta deliziata di poter parlare nuovamente tedesco con le nostre socie Anne, austriaca, e francese con Moira, britannica. Subito è stata chiamata Heidi, un’altra ospite originaria di Amburgo che ha cominciato anche lei a cinguettare in tedesco, sotto l’occhio attento di Maria, 98 anni.

Mrs. Erika, born a Swiss, was delighted to be able to speak  German again with our members Anne, from Austria, and French with Moira, a British citizen. Very quickly Heidi was summoned, another guest coming from Hamburg who also started chirping in German, under the attentive eye of Maria, 98 years old.


Maria, italianissima. non ha mai lavorato a maglia in vita sua, ma era desiderosa di provare, rideva quando non riusciva ad andare avanti, captava il tedesco delle altre e di tanto in tanto ripeteva ‘Schoen’ (bello), una nuova parola in una nuova lingua.

Maria, 'Italianissima', never knitted in her life, but was eager to learn, laughing when she made a mistake while picking up some German. Form time to time she would say ‘Schoen’ (beautiful), a new word in a new language.


Ada, anche lei sopra i 90, un po’ confusa sul suo anno di nascita, ci ha raccontato che  il padre lavorava in una polveriera, che metteva in guardia lei e la sorella dicendo di non fidarsi dei militari chiacchieroni. Ma poi Ada e la sorella avevano finito per sposarsi proprio con due militari, e il padre aveva dovuto ricredersi.

Ada, another one over 90, a little bit confused about the year in which she was born, told us that her father worked in a gunpowder factory and always cautioned her and her sister about big mouthed soldiers. Ada and her sister both married army men and the father had to change his mind.


Intanto Osvaldo ci guardava, col mento appoggiato al suo bastone. Di età indefinibile, più vicino ai cento che ai 90, si è sposato 4 volte, ha seppellito 4 mogli e a quanto pare sta cercando la quinta: davvero un uomo pericoloso!
In due ore la stanza si è riempita. C’era un gran chiacchiericcio, chi dipanava matasse, chi lavorava a maglia, chi semplicemente ci guardava in silenzio ma comunque partecipava.


In the mean time Osvaldo looked at us, his chin propped on his walking stick. Of indefinable age, closer to 100 than to 90, he got married 4 times, buried 4 wives and apparently is looking for a fith one: a dangerous man indeed!
In 2 hours the room got crowded. There was a lot of chatter, who was unravelling skeins, who knitted, who simply looked at us keeping silent, but taking part any way.


Partita da un’idea semplice, è’ stata un’esperienza unica, di un’umanità incredibile.
Dedicare due ore di tempo in un mese agli anziani non è un grande impegno e se molti di noi riuscissero a farlo, forse la vecchiaia farebbe meno paura.

Born from a very simple idea, it was an unique experience, incredibly human.
Giving 2 hours of time once a month is not a terrible commitment and if more of us could do it, maybe we would be less frightened of getting old.
 

Arte per posta - ‘Art in the mail’

Sapevo che sarebbe arrivato e conoscendo chi lo aveva spedito, ero piena di aspettativa e curiosità.
Ieri pomeriggio finalmente tornando a casa ho trovato il pacchettino di Neki.
La busta di per sé era già interessante: ‘Linea Verde’ è una iniziativa dell Poste Spagnole che fornisce materiali da imballaggio ecologico e finanzia il rimboschimento di alberi autoctoni in Spagna.

I knew that it was coming and knowing the sender I was full of expectations and curiosity.
At last coming home yesterday afternoon I found the parcel that Neki mailed me.
The envelope was interesting in itself:  ‘Linea Verde’  is an initiative of the Spanish Mail service supplying eco-friendly packing materials and financing the reforestation of autochthonous  trees in Spain.

Seta rosa scuro per i miei ricami, neanche ci fossimo parlate, ho un progetto che mi richiede proprio un filo di quel colore.

E poi la sorpresa: posso dire che ci speravo? Dopo aver letto questo post sui Nettle Diaries, ero rimasta colpita dalle complesse elaborazioni della mia amica e avrei voluto per lo meno vedere di persona la sua opera.
And then the surprise: can I say that I was hoping for this? Since I read the post on the Nettle Diaries, I was wondering about the complex elaborations done by my friend and I would have wished at least to see in person her work.




Mi piace immaginare le teste di due mitiche figure, due sirene forse, che nuotano fianco a fianco nel mare della vita.
I like to imagine the heads of 2 mythical figures, maybe mermaids, swimming side by side in the sea of life.


 

Difficile rendere con le foto la squisitezza delle due pagine interne, le sfumature di colore, la diversa consistenza delle superfici. ‘A’ sta per Aix? E’ il Musée des Tapisseries quello al centro? E il cielo azzurro di Provenza a destra?
It is difficult to show with photograph how exquisite the internal pages are, the shades of colour, the different textures: does ‘A’  mean Aix? Is the building in the center the Musée des Tapisseries? And the blue Provence sky on the right?
     

Non glielo chiederò, non ha importanza. Importante è l’emozione che questa opera mi trasmette, soprattutto il senso di amicizia.
I will not ask, it doesn’t matter. What matters is the emotions that this work gives me, especially the feeling of friendship.

Tintura e ricamo - ‘Dyeing and embroidering’

Potrei riempire un intero post se dovessi fare una lista dei blog che mi hanno ispirata, e che continuano ad ispirarmi. Chiedo scusa a chi lascio fuori, ma nell’anno passato sono stati fondamentali per me gli incontri con Neki, Jean, Penny e Deanna.
Chi tinge, chi ricama, chi fa l’uno e l’altro.

Un giorno mi sono decisa, ho pasticciato nuovamente coi due pezzi di tessuto che avevo provato a tingere con le barbe rosse, facendo un secondo esperimento coi diosperi. Della seta avevo accennato, perché aveva preso un leggero tono rosa, del lino no, era diventato scuro, di uno spento grigio con tracce marroni, di una tristezza infinita.
Volendo recuperare il lino, l’ho messo in varichina, e con sorpresa (e delizia) l’ho visto assumere  caldi toni bruni.

I could fill a whole post if I had to make a list of all the bloggers that inspired me and continue to inspire me. I beg the pardon of those that I will not mention, but in the last year  Neki, Jean, Penny and Deanna  have been fundamental for me. One dyes, the other embroiders, or they do both. 


One day I started messing with the two pieces of fabric that I had tried to dye with red beet root , experimenting a second time with persimmon. I vaguely mentioned that the silk got a faint pinkish colour, but I didn’t speak of the linen that had become dark, a dull grey with some brown in it, oh so sad.
In spite of this the fabric was nice, and hoping to recover it, I used bleach: with surprise and delight I saw soft brown tones coming out.


Ho lavorato senza dire niente a nessuno, più ricamavo e più ero felice. Ho trovato che il ricamo mi libera l’anima, non so mai quando prendo l’ago in mano dove finirò, che effetto otterrò. Avevo una traccia da seguire, ma poi i colori e i punti sono stati aggiunti a seconda del mio umore.




I stitched without telling anybody, the more I embroidered the happier I became. I found that embroidery frees my soul, I do not know where I am heading to, what I will obtain every time that I get the needle in my hand. I had a trace to follow, but the colour of the thread and the stitches were added according to my mood.




Nel frattempo mi sono iscritta al TAST: per chi non lo conoscesse, ogni martedì Sharon insegna un punto di ricamo. I primi due li conoscevo, e qui li ho inseriti.
In the mean time I joined TAST: take a stitch Tuesday is a blog where Sharon teaches a stitch a week. I knew the first two and added them to the cloth.

Nel mio girovagare per Firenze, ieri sono passata, indovinate un po’, davanti alle vetrine di Ferragamo e grande è stata la mia sorpresa quando ho visto questo:

Il Merletto di Tavarnelle!
La mia curiosità era stata solleticata lo scorso ottobre quando Silvia aveva scritto un post proprio su questa tecnica.Tavarnelle  si trova a circa 30 km da Firenze, ci sono passata mille volte, non mi ci sono mai fermata e non sapevo nemmeno che ci fosse un punto inventato proprio lì agli inizi del ‘900.
Si tratta in poche parole di un merletto ad ago che venne inizialmente insegnato alle bambine nell’asilo Vincenzo Corti dalla suora Arcangela Banchelli. Era così richiesto per ornare abiti e biancheria che più tardi anche le donne del posto si dedicarono alla sua produzione, tanto che divenne per molte fonte di reddito.




Lace from Tavarnelle!
My curiosity had been aroused last October when Silvia wrote a post on this technique. Tavarnelle is about 30 km from Florence, I passed through a thousand times, I never stopped and I certainly didn’t know that a stitch had been invented here at the beginning of the XX century.
In short, it is a kind of needle lace that was initially taught to young girls in the Vincenzo Corti kindergarten by a nun called Arcangela Banchelli. It was in high demand to embellish clothing and lingerie, so that later  local women started producing it, thus becoming an important source of income.


Salvatore Ferragamo, da quella mente geniale che era, non poteva non notarlo ed infatti lo utilizzò nelle sue calzature, come si può leggere nel website del Museo. Nel 1959 creò il  Sandalo Ranina per Anna Magnani, eccolo:
The lace could not go unnoticed by the bright mind of Salvatore Ferragamo who in fact used it in his shoes, as can be read on the  Museo’s website. In 1959 he created the Ranina Sandal for the actress Anna Magnani, this one:




Mia madre, che è sempre stata una donna riservata, di costumi moderati e molto frugale, aveva (e ancora possiede) un paio di decolleté di Ferragamo ornate giro giro proprio da questo merletto. Ogni volta che le indossa riceve molti complimenti: sono ancora talmente eleganti, classiche ed attuali per quanto oramai abbiano più di 50 anni.

My mother, who has always been a reserved woman, with sober costumes and very frugal, had (and still has) a pair of Ferragamo’s pumps whose edge is decorated by Tavarnelle lace. Every time that she wears them she receives many compliments: they are still so elegant, classic and fashionable in spite of being over 50 years old.


Non so niente del modello in vetrina ma penserei che si tratti di una riedizione e che il merletto  sia fatto a macchina.
Combinazione qualche giorno fa ho fotografato una vetrata a lato dell’edificio che ospita ‘La Nazione’, il quotidiano di Firenze: non pare anche a voi una libera ispirazione del merletto di Tavarnelle?

I know nothing about the model in the window, but I would think that it is a re-edition and that the lace is machine made.
By chance a few days ago I took a picture of a side glass window on the building of the local daily paper ‘La Nazione’: wouldn’t you think as well that it has been inspired by Tavarnelle lace?


                              

Ho scoperto che c’è anche un museo ospitato nell’antica pieve di San Pietro in Bossolo, dove convivono l’arte sacra e l’arte dell’ago, ossia, come recita il website del Comune di Tavarnelle, ‘due antichi tesori, per nulla intimoriti dalla differenza di età, dialogano in armonia attraverso il linguaggio della creatività’.

I also found out that there is a museum hosted in the antique church of San Pietro in Bossolo, were the sacred and the needle art coexist, or, as found in the Comune di Tavarnelle website, ‘ two ancient treasures, not at all intimidated by the difference in age, harmoniously dialogue through the language of creativity.

Oshogatsu

Dal momento che il prossimo aprile andrò in Giappone, mi incuriosisce saperne di più su questo paese ed i suoi usi. Quasi per caso ho letto il progamma di gennaio del Japanese American national Museum e l’evento in programma per l’8 gennaio è una celebrazione del Nuovo Anno, Oshogatsu.

Since next April I will be visitnig Japan, I am very curious about this country and its uses. Almost by chance I read the program of events of the Japanese American national Museum and the one listed for the 8th of January is the celebration of the New Year, or Oshogatsu.

Un tempo l’inizio del nuovo anno era regolato sul calendario lunare (come fanno in Cina) ma dal 1873 è stato adottato il calendario gregoriano, di conseguenza adesso è celebrato il Primo Gennaio.
In questo periodo è importante essere con la famiglia, per cui i giapponesi viaggiano estensivamente per riunirsi coi propri cari. Da quello che ho letto, il costo dei trasporti viene addirittura triplicato e comunque se non si prenota per tempo si rischia di restare a terra.

Case e negozi vengono decorati con composizioni fatte con bambù e pino, piante che rappresentano forza e resilienza, Altro importante simbolo è l’arancia (daidai) che simboleggia il susseguirsi delle generazioni.

A while ago the beginning of the new year was based on the lunar calendar (as in China) but starting from 1873 the Gregorian calendar has been adopted, consequently  it is now celebrated on the First of January.
In this period it is important to be with family, therefore Japanese people extensively travel in order to be reunited with their relatives. From what I read the cost of transport can even be tripled and anyway if you want to be sure to travel you have to make a timely reservation.


Houses and shops are decorated with composition made with pine and bamboo, plants that mean strength and resilience. Another important symbol is the orange (daidai) that represents the flow of generations.



Le case vengono pulite a fondo, pronte per un nuovo inizio. Proprio come facciamo noi per Pasqua: deve essere un’esigenza istintiva e irrefrenabile questa del rinnovamento. Poi il 31 dicembre tutto si ferma, e nemmeno cucinano. E’ tradizione preparare dei cibi che possono essere conservati per vari giorni senza frigorifero, si chiamano Osechi-ryori,  c’è un interessante articolo in inglese su Wikipedia (da cui ho preso anche la foto).

Houses are thoroughly cleansed, ready for a new beginning. Exactly as we do for Easter: it must be a common instinctive and irrepressible need of renovation. On the 31st of December all activity stops, and no food is made. Traditionally foods that need no refrigeration and that last several days are prepared, called Osechi-ryori, there is an interesting article on Wikipedia (where I also got the picture).


Di tradizioni  ce ne sono molte, ma quella che più mi ha colpita è quella chiamata Fukubukuro, da fuko=fortuna e bukuro=borsa, sacchetto. Si acquista il sacchetto senza sapere cosa contenga. In pratica è una sorpresa, fra le varie mercanzie scontatissime, si può trovare anche qualcosa di veramente bello e costoso. E’ un sistema che usano i negozianti per liberarsi della merce invenduta. Inventato agli inizi del ‘900 dai grandi magazzini Matsuya, ha avuto grande diffusione in Giappone e pare che si formino lunghe code in attesa dell’apertura dei negozi.

There are several traditions, but the one that struck my curiosity is the Fukubukuro, from fuku=luck and  bukuro= bag.
Practically you buy the bag without knowing what it contains, it is a surprise and among the various discounted good something really beautiful and expensive can be found. It is a way that shopkeepers use to get rid of unsold goods. It was invented at the beginning of the XX century by the Matsuya department stores, has a great diffusion in the whole of Japan and it seems that long lines form waiting for the opening of the shops.

Il primo giorno dell’anno - ‘The first day of the year’

La giornata era splendida, fredda ma con un sole sfavillante: quale modo migliore di cominciare un nuovo anno che con una passeggiata?
Mi sono alzata di buon’ora, piena di energia e di ottimismo, e sono uscita. Non che ci fossero molte persone in giro, ho visto soprattutto turisti, direi che i fiorentini erano quasi tutti a letto a curarsi la sbornia.
Queste sono la Primavera e l’Estate, un po’ fuori  stagione, sul ponte Santa Trinita con un gruppo infreddolito di giapponesi.
The day was splendid, cold but with a sparkling sun: what a better way to start the new year with a walk?
I got up quite early, full of energy and optimism, and I went out. There weren’t many people around, mostly I saw tourists, I would say that Florentines were still in bed cuddling their hangovers.
Above the statues of Spring and Summer, a little out of season, on Santa Trinita bridge with a group of shivering Japaneses.


Ho avuto modo di soffermarmi davanti alla Meridiana del Museo Galileo e notare che la coda della Lucipera (metà lucertola e metà vipera) era stata mozzata. Francamente il termine ‘Lucipera’ mi è completamente nuovo, non ricordo un riferimento mitologico e probabilmente è un neologismo.

I stopped in front of the Sundial of the Museo Galileo and I noticed that the tail of the Liziper (half lizard and half viper)  has been chopped.
Quite frankly the word ‘Liziper’ is completely new to me, I do not remember a mythological reference and probably is a neologism.


Sulla strada per Palazzo Strozzi sono passata davanti alle vetrine di Ferragamo, sempre curate ed interessanti. Queste sono quelle allestite per le Feste.
On my way to Palazzo Strozzi I passed in front of Ferragamo’s windows, always well done and interesting. These are those that were set up for the festivities.

Prada invece esponeva queste sculture di carta, possiamo parlare di tassellazione?
Prada on the other hand was displaying these paper sculptures, could we speak of tessellations?


     

La mostra ‘Denaro e Bellezza’  viene definita come un viaggio alle origini del sistema bancario moderno. Pensata nel 2006, chi si sarebbe immaginato che sarebbe stata così attuale proprio in questo momento. Si parla di grandi ricchezze, di gestione di prestiti, usura, Chiesa e Rinascimento. Se non potete visitarla, leggete il sito ufficiale del museo, ne vale la pena.
Mi ha fatto sorridere rileggere delle Leggi Suntuarie che regolavano l’uso delle vesti ed ornamenti, ed anche banchetti, matrimoni, battesimi e funerali, in modo da contenere il lusso, “limitando importazioni e spese, per difendere i tradizionali valori di austerità anche a scapito del nuovo mondo che si apre al commercio”.
Vi immaginate come potrebbero essere oggi? “ Non più di un Ipad o di un computer a famiglia, divieto di cambiare il cellulare ogni sei mesi, e le automobili prima di 10 anni dall’acquisto” …e poi ci lamentiamo del nostro governo…

The exhibition Money and Beauty is described as a journey to the origin of modern banking. Conceived in 2006, who could have imagined that it would bee so pertinent right in this moment. It is a bout great wealth, management of loans, usury, the Church (catholic, obviously) and the Rinascimento. If you can not visit the exhibition, read about it on the official website of the museum, it is worth your time.
I was amused being reminded of the Sumptuary Laws that regulated cloths and ornaments, and also banquest, weddings, christenings and funerals, in order to contain luxury by “limiting imports and expenses, to defend traditional values of austerity even to the detriment of the new world that was opening itself to commerce”.
Can you imagine how it could be today? “ No more than one Ipad or computer for each family, prohibition to change cell phones every 6 months and cars before 10 years from purchase” … and we complain about our government…
