Sri Lanka perché – Why Sri Lanka

C’è una ragione dietro al mio ultimo viaggio: una scuola, creata dall mia amica Giuliana per insegnare inglese e computer ad un gruppo di bambini poverissimi di Hikkadwa. Si tratta di un doposcuola frequentato da 45 bambini tra i 6 ed i 14 anni, divisi in 4 classi.
There is a reason behind my last trip: a school created by my friend Giuliana in order to teach English and Computer Literacy to a group of poor children in Hikkadwa. It is an afternoon school attended by 45 children between 6 and 14 years of age, divided in 4 classes.


Giuliana ha messo in piedi una Onlus qui in Italia, la AFJ, che finanzia le operazioni in Sri Lanka e sta cercando di ottenere il riconoscimento ufficiale dal governo locale come NGO. La Onlus è finanziata dagli sforzi sovrumani di Giuliana che organizza eventi, cene e mercati in ogni suo momento libero. E da donazioni, poche per la verità.
Giuliana established an Italian NGO, the AFJ, that finances the works in Sri Lanka. She is trying to obtain the legal recognition as a local NGO in Sri Lanka too. The Italian NGO is financed by Giuliana’s supehuman efforts who organises events, dinners, fairs in every her spare moment. And by donations, not many, really.


Per il momento la scuola è sita in due locali in affitto, ma è in progetto la costruzione di un edificio per il quale il terreno è già stato acquistato e recintato. Data la situazione mondiale, purtroppo non è stata ancora raggiunta la cifra per dare il via ai lavori, ma ci auguriamo che questo possa avvenire molto presto.
At the moment the school is located in two rented rooms but there is the project to build a schoolhouse for which the land has already been bought and fenced. Because of the world’s general situation unfortunately all the necessary amount hasn’t yet been obtained, but we hope that the building will start in a reasonable time.


Questi i fatti. Ma dietro tutto questo c’è la storia di una Madre che reagisce all’improvvisa e tragica scomparsa dell’unico figlio ventitreenne decidendo di fare qualcosa per bambini che vivono in condizioni disagiate. Con tenacia, perseveranza, senza chiedere niente a nessuno: quanto c’è da imparare da questa Madre.
These are the facts, behind which is the story of a Mother who reacts to the sudden and tragic passing of her twenty-three-year only son by deciding to help children living in needy conditions. With persistence and perseverance, without asking anything to anybody: how much to learn from this Mother.


All’inizio ci sono stati il restauro del pozzo e la costruzione di una casa per una madre povera, sola con due figli piccoli. Poi l’idea della scuola, per dare una migliore educazione che consenta ai giovani di avere lavori migliori e migliori condizioni di vita. Oltretutto in un paese dilaniato per anni dalla guerra civile.
At the beginning there were the renovation of a well and the building of a little house for a poor mother alone with two young kids. Then the idea of the school to give a better education permitting young people to obtain better jobs and better living conditions. Moreover in a country torn by civil war for many years.


Il piccolo gruppo a cui mi sono unita comprendeva oltre a Giuliana, Maria Grazia, una camerawoman di talento, e Carlo, fotografo freelance di grande esperienza, che hanno messo le loro capacità al servizio della causa come volontari. La prima per la realizzazione di un video, il secondo per un servizio fotografico che consentano alla AFJ di ottenere donazioni e finanziamenti.
Quanto a me, ero solo la mamma di un compagno di scuola.
The little group that I joined, apart from Giuliana, included Maria Grazia, a talented camerawomen, and Carlo, a freelance photographer with great experience, who offered their skills to the cause, as volunteers. The first one shot a video, the latter took pictures that will be used to obtain donations and funding for the AFJ.
As for me, I was only the mother of a classmate.


Sono membro dell’Associazione, qualcosina ho fatto, ma non tanto. Questo viaggio mi ha fatto capire la portata di questa missione, di come questo progetto sia un grande progetto. E’ il famoso insegnare a pescare perché poi i bambini un giorno possano procurarsi il pesce da soli.
Al nostro arrivo siamo stati accolti dai bambini tutti vestiti di bianco, dalle due bravissime maestre festanti che avevano organizzato decorazioni, parole di benvenuto, uno spettacolino. Non mi vergogno a dire che l’emozione mi ha travolta, non ho fatto che piangere. E sapete perché?


I am member of the organisation, I did a few things but very little. This trip made me realise the extent of this mission, why this project is a great project. It is the well known teaching to fish in order that one day the children will be able to catch their own fish.
On our arrival we were welcomed by the white dressed children, by the two excellent and joyous teachers that had organised decorations, words of welcome and a little performance. I am not ashamed to say that I was overwhelmed by emotion and couldn’t stop crying. Can I tell you why?


Per gli occhi brillanti delle mamme che aspettavano fuori, per la gratitudine e la riconoscenza che ho letto nei loro volti. Io ho avuto la fortuna di poter dare ai miei figli un’educazione di un certo tipo, sono grata della possibilità che ho avuto. Questo viaggio mi ha fatto capire che è il momento di fare qualcosa per i figli di altre mamme.
For the mothers’ brilliant eyes waiting outside, for the gratitude and thankfulness that I read on their faces. I was lucky to have the possibility to give a certain kind of education to my children and I am appreciative for this. This trip made me understand that it is the moment to do something for other mothers’ children.

L’isola splendente- ‘The resplendent island’

Il mio pensiero corre alla vacanza appema trascorsa, al lungo viaggio esplorativo dello Sri Lanka. Abbiamo percorso circa 2700 chilometri facendo praticamente il giro dell’isola.
Come dimenticare il profumo dei frangipane, disposti in maniera così romantica in una ciotola colorata all’ingresso dell’albergo, quasi a darci il primo benvenuto.

My thoughts go back to the just ended holiday, to the long explorative trip of Sri Lanka. We drove for about 2700 kilometers, practically the tour of the island.
How is it possible to forget the smell of frangipani, so romantically placed in a coloured bowl at the hotel entrance, as if to give us our first welcome.



O il sapore del riso e curry servito su una foglia di banana, in un piccolo ristorante familiare sulla strada per Kandy, dove tutti mangiavano con le mani, ma per i visitatori stranieri si sono velocemente trovate le posate di metallo.

Or the taste of rice and curry served on a banana leaf, in a little family restaurant along the road to Kandy, where everybody was eating with their hands, but metal cutlery was hastily produced for the foreign visitors.



Kandy e l’emozione della Esala Perahera, la maggiore festa buddista del paese. La sfilata dura circa 4 ore, con un impressionante numero dei partecipanti che avanzano alla luce delle fiaccole danzando e suonando i tamburi; ed altrettanto impressionante è il numero degli elefanti, bardati a festa e decorati di lampadine festose.



Kandy and the emotion of the Esala Perahera, the biggest Buddhist festival of the country. The pageant goes on for about 4 hours, with an impressing number of participants that parade dancing and playing drums  under torchlight; and equally impressing is the number of elephants, dressed up and decorated by festive lights.



Poi abbiamo attraversato le colline dell’interno dagli scenari fantastici, piene di vegetazione e di sterminate piantagioni di tè.



Then we passed through the hills with beautiful landscapes, full of vegetation and tea plantations.



Dopo una sosta di diversi giorni a Hikkadwa e della quale parlerò diffusamente in un prossimo post, abbiamo proseguito verso nord in direzione Jaffna, lungo spiagge sabbiose e deserte.
After a stop off in Hikkadwa of which I will speak in detail in a next post, we continued northbound to Jaffna, through sandy and deserted beaches.
 

A Jaffna siamo arrivati nel pieno delle festività induiste al Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, un inaspettato regalo del quale abbiamo gioito enormemente. Gli uomini entrano nel tempio a torso nudo, le donne sono tutte agghindate coi loro sari più belli, è tutto un turbinio di colore, di suoni e di odori. Fantastico.

We arrived in Jaffna right in the middle of the Hindu festival at the Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, an unexpected gift that we enormously enjoyed. Men enter the temple’s grounds with their bared chests, women are dressed up in their most beautiful saris, all around is a whirl of colours, sounds and smells. Just terrific.



Ho cercato di immaginare questo paese come sarà in futuro, quando saranno rimarginate le ferite degli ultimi anni. Per questo non ho fatto foto di quel che poteva evocare solo dolore e sofferenza  anche se erano ancora ben visibili i danni dello tsunami del 2004 e le distruzioni portate dalla guerra civile recentemente conclusa. Ma le ferite ci sono, e che ferite.

I tried to imagine this country how it will be in the future, when the scars of the last years will be healed. This is why I didn’t take pictures of what could only evoke pain and suffering, even if the damages of the 2004 tsunami and the destructions caused by the recently ended civil war were still very evident. But the scars are there, and how impressive they are.
